7 Game of Thrones characters who deserve a spinoff more than Jon Snow
Old Nan
Old Nan might be a minor character on Game of Thrones, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have a rich story to tell. Introduced to us as an elderly caretaker living in Winterfell, Old Nan knows everything there is to know about Westeros. Though we don’t know exactly how old she is, she’s familiar with ancient history and is a fantastic storyteller. We learn a lot about Martin’s world through Old Nan’s stories, some of which are likely exaggerated but nevertheless very entertaining.
There’s so much we don’t know about the character and not much source material to go off of, meaning writers could really have fun creating a story for her. Plus, not for nothing, there is a theory that Old Nan might’ve had a romance with Ser Duncan the Tall, who will feature on HBO’s Dunk & Egg show. A spinoff focused on Old Nan could either follow her backstory and show us where and when she grew up, or she could serve as a narrator for a show about Westerosi history.
It could be cool to see an animated miniseries about the ancient history of Westeros, narrated by Old Nan. HBO could go in a number of directions with the character, as long as they bring her back.
Melisandre
Speaking of mysterious elderly women who know way more than most, our last entry on the list is Melisandre. A priestess of the Lord of Light, Melisandre is incredibly intriguing because of her mystical powers and moral ambiguity. The Red Woman is originally from the city of Asshai and dedicates her life to serving R’hllor, the supposed one true god. As we saw on Game of Thrones, her zeal can lead her down some frightening paths.
Though Melisandre appears be a beautiful young woman, she’s actually hundreds of years old and uses her magic ruby necklace to appear much younger. She’s likely witnessed a long list of major events in her life, something that could be explored in a spinoff.
The religion of R’hllor is something I’d love to learn more about, but there just hasn’t been enough time to go deep into its origins. Melisandre is the one who introduces the Prince That Was Promised prophecy in Game of Thrones, and now we know from House of the Dragon that Aegon I Targaryen dreamed a version of it hundreds of years ago. It would be awesome to get more background on how these prophecies interact.
Remember, the added detail of Aegon dreaming up the prophecy came from Martin himself and isn’t just something the House of the Dragon writers added in. There’s so much a spinoff about Melisandre and her faith could get into.
