Remus Lupin is the best of the Marauders. Lupin is one of my favorite characters from the Harry Potter books. Introduced in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts, Lupin quickly bonds with Harry and tries to keep him out of trouble. He’s also an integral part of the Order of the Phoenix and the fight against Voldemort and the Death Eaters during the First and Second Wizarding Wars.
After getting bitten by Fenrir Greyback, a werewolf, as a child, Lupin has a very unique experience at Hogwarts. During the full moon, he’s sent to the Shrieking Shack to wait out his transformation, which almost results in the death of Severus Snape after a prank by Sirius Black. Lupin is a key member of the Marauders and a central reason the group was formed. After learning of Lupin’s lycanthropy, James Potter, Sirius Black, and Peter Pettigrew, his friends, form the Marauders and learn how to become animagus to keep Lupin company as a werewolf, and to cause mischief the rest of the time.
Lupin is killed in the Battle of Hogwarts, along with his wife Nymphadora Tonks. As we learn in the epilogue, Harry helps raise Teddy just like Sirius and Remus helped raise him.
So why is Lupin No. 1 among the Marauders? I think it’s his story and background and how he used his past to impact the future in a positive way. Similar to Sirius, Lupin has persisted through adversity his whole life, and he hasn’t let his plight defeat him. Instead, he uses it to help others and continue the fight against the dark. Despite everything, he’s not hungry for revenge or looking to hold someone accountable. He acts because it’s the right thing to do. Remus’ selfless nature makes him the best of the Marauders.
