Invincible boss teases potential Spider-Man crossover
By Ashley Hurst
Invincible is back, and it’s bigger and better than ever. The new season on Amazon’s animated superhero show has a little of everything, including a multiverse storyline. Yes, if you didn’t get enough of the multiverse from Marvel and DC, prepare for more with Invincible. At least we can say that the Invincible comics the show is adapting featured a multiverse storyline long before it was in vogue.
And with multiversal chaos, naturally, there comes outlandish fan theories! If there’s one hero who can’t keep his nose out of the multiverse, it’s Spider-Man. Whether he’s messing up the web of universes in No Way Home or meeting thousands of other versions of himself in Across the Spider-Verse, he’s always poking around.
Let’s be real here for a second. The likelihood of this cameo is incredibly low; both characters are from completely different properties released by different companies. With that said, the two have previously met on the page, in Marvel Comics’ Marvel Team-Up #14 back in 2006. The main reason the rumor of a TV crossover has come about is due to the cover of this issue being shown in a teaser for season 2, although if it does show up, it’s very subtle:
Also, Josh Keaton, who has played Spider-Man in animated series and movie, has a role on Invincible. But don’t forget: this is a show produced by comic writer Robert Kirkman, who famously loves to play with his fans. Fans of The Walking Dead will tell you that much.
Whether or not a cameo actually happens remains to be seen, but showrunner Simon Racioppa admits he’s a fan of crossovers. “I’d love to have crossovers with all, with DC, with Marvel, with all these other characters. I mean, in our show you gotta have to wait and see if that’s a thing that can happen or not,” he told The Hollywood Handle.
Addressing the Spider-Man theory specifically, Racioppa explained that it’s super difficult to get Marvel to license characters, especially when it comes to television. “I’d love that to happen, you know, is very tricky nowadays, for Marvel they sometimes license their characters to other studios. So crossing over in television is way harder than it is in comic books.”
How does the multiverse fit into Invincible season 2?
The first four episodes of season 2 are absolutely jam-packed. There’s so much going on, including a multiverse arc that revolves around new villain Angstrom Levy, a person born with the power to hop between universes. With (initially) philanthropic goals, Angstrom wants to locate every version of himself from across the multiverse and merge them together to make himself superhuman.
Without diving into spoiler territory, fans of the comics know Levy will become Invincible’s biggest arch-enemy.
Invincible season 2 premieres on November 3 on Amazon Prime Video, with new episodes dropping weekly. Will Spidey appear? Only time will tell.
