The second season of Loki has been airing these past several weeks, and it’s been a bright ray of sunshine in the dark well that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become. Okay, that’s an exaggeration, but it was good! What next?

Well, to start, there will be no more episodes of Loki season 2. Season 2 had six episodes and we’ve seen them all. The finale, “Glorious Purpose,” aired last week.

But is that the end of the show or just the season? There’s no clear answer, but I wouldn’t go expecting new episodes of Loki anytime soon.

Will Loki return for season 3?

The end of Loki seemed pretty definitive. After numerous failed attempts to save the TVA (and the multiverse) from destruction, Loki concluded that the only way to save his friends was to take on the responsibility himself. He personally took hold of the fraying strands of the multiverse, keeping things stable. He may have to remain that way forever, sitting on his throne as the new god of time.

It certainly felt like a definitive end, and showrunner Eric Martin seemed to agree. “We approached this as like two halves of a book,” he told CinemaBlend. “Season one, first half. Season two, we close the book on Loki and the TVA. Where it goes beyond that, I don’t know. I just wanted to tell a full and complete story across those two seasons.”

Also, the season 2 finale of Loki had the same title as the series premiere: “Glorious Purpose.” Sounds like a full circle moment, no?

But we can’t be sure. Superheroes — Marvel or otherwise — are known for coming back from the dead all the time. And Loki isn’t even dead, just busy. He may yet show up again.
