2) Eren manipulates Grisha

The story of Attack on Titan takes place in a time loop of 2,000 years until the cycle is broken with Eren’s death. Throughout the anime, viewers are led to believe that Eren is burdened with the powers of the Attack Titan and the Founding Titan, which his father bequeathed onto him without his consent or understanding. Eren, it seems, is a victim of choices made by other people.

However, season 4 shakes things up when we see that it was Eren — using the powers bestowed on him by the Attack and Founding Titans — who persuaded Grisha Yeager to kill the Reiss family and take the Founding Titan in the first place. What seemed like a peaceful walk down memory lane for Eren and his half-brother Zeke turned into one of the most mind-boggling plot twists of the entire anime. Grisha’s devastated reaction to finding out what Eren was about to do remains imprinted on the minds of AoT fans.

1) Betrayal

Reiner changed the entire trajectory of the story with one sentence halfway through season 2: “I’m the Armored Titan and he’s the Colossal Titan.” Unable to cope with the pressure of living a dual life, Reiner drops the biggest bombshell of the series in casual conversation as a baffled Bertholt looks on.

It is the complete lack of drama that makes the scene so eerie. The Colossal Titan and Attack Titan have decimated civilization within the walls. They have been responsible for thousands of deaths, including that of Eren’s own mother, and now this man that Eren has fought alongside is admitting that he and the unassuming Bertholt are behind it all? Who are they? Where did they come from? Why did they break the walls?

This scene brings up a dozen questions the show spends the next couple of seasons answering. AoT presents many more shocking twists down the line, but this moment sets the tone for the rest of the series, accompanied by that terrific background score. It truly deserves the number one spot.
