Andor star Diego Luna producing a new spinoff of The Boys called The Boys: Mexico
By Dan Selcke
Amazon has a hit in The Boys, its ultraviolent superhero satire, and it’s milking that fact for all its worth. The Boys has yet to air its fourth season, but we’ve already seen two spinoffs: first, The Boys Presents: Diabolical, an animated anthology series featuring characters from the main show; and more recently we got Gen V, set at a superhero college.
Now, Deadline reports on another spinoff on the way: The Boys: Mexico. This Spanish-language series is not just a remake of The Boys for a different audience, but a proper spinoff of the original show catching us up with the superhero industry in Mexico. The show is set in Mexico City and will be written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, the writer behind Blue Beetle.
We don’t know who’s in the cast yet, but there are some pretty big names behind the camera. Mexican actors Diego Luna (Star Wars: Andor) and Gael Garcia Bernal (Mozart in the Jungle, Werewolf by Night) will be producing the series. They may appear in the show as well, although according to Deadline neither of them will have major roles.
Is The Boys spreading itself too thin?
What Amazon is doing with The Boys reminds me what they wanted to do with their expensive spy drama Citadel, which aired to disinterested golf claps earlier this year. The plan there was to make several Citadel spinoffs in different languages, including Indian, Spanish and Italian. And that might still be the plan. But Citadel went over with a weary shrug while people actually enjoy The Boys, so maybe Amazon is retooling things.
That does, however, raise the question of whether Amazon is spreading The Boys franchise too thin. I like the original show a lot, but I haven’t watched the spinoffs yet and I’m not sure if I will. And they’re becoming more interconnected. The season 1 finale of Gen V included appearances by Homelander (Anthony Starr) and Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), two of the main characters from the mothership show. And according to showrunner Erik Kripke, their appearances set up season 4 of the The Boys proper.
“The Homelander stuff felt, to us, like a culmination of this season of Gen V, and I would say the Butcher cameo is more than anything else what sets up Season 4,” Kripke recently told Men’s Health. “Butcher, heading into Season 4, is well aware that there’s this virus out there that can kill superheroes. So, we wanted to see the ground zero of that moment, which is what we did in the very, very last moments of this season of Gen V.”
"I think a lot of things in Gen V set the table for Season 4, and I think we’re trying to keep with the same rules that we kept for Gen V-it would be helpful to see Gen V to understand Season 4, and provide a little more context and a little more depth. But it’s by no means necessary…If you just want to watch The Boys without watching Gen V, that’s great, if you want to watch Gen V without watching The Boys, that’s great too. If not both of these shows, we just want you watching one of them, and not have it feel like homework."
Kripke is saying all the right things here, reassuring fans that they don’t have to watch one show to enjoy the other, and yet plot elements from Gen V will carry into The Boys. I hope Kripke and company are smart enough to keep things truly separate; otherwise I fear that The Boys universe could get too big to digest.
But maybe I’m worrying over nothing. The Walking Dead has multiple spinoffs shows on the air and it seems to be doing okay. In the spirit of ending on a positive note, here’s footage of Antony Starr filming his cameo for Gen V, cursing up a storm all the while:
There’s no release date as of yet for The Boys: Mexico. As for The Boys season 4, it will be along sometime in 2024.
