Foundation will officially return for season 3 on Apple TV+

It’s official: Apple TV+ has renewed Foundation — its TV adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s expansive science fiction series — for a third season. “I’m thrilled Apple has given us the opportunity to continue chronicling Asimov’s pioneering galactic saga,” said producer David S. Goyer, per Variety. “This time, the stakes for Foundation and Empire are even higher as the Mule takes center stage, along with fan-favorites Bayta, Toran, Ebling, and Magnifico Giganticus.”

Matt Cherniss, the head of programming at Apple TV+, also weighed in:

"We have all been incredibly impressed with the ambitious, action-packed and imaginative adaptation that David and the rest of this gifted creative team and cast have brought to life with this premium sci-fi series from day one. To watch ‘Foundation’ become such a global hit has been beyond exciting with audiences around the world continuing to be captivated week after week by this dramatic and compelling journey to save humanity. We can’t wait for everyone to experience what is in store for characters old and new in season three."

Foundation is a very tricky story to adapt onscreen. It takes place over multiple generations and vast distances. It’s often more concerned with high-minded ideas about politics and mathematics than with characters. But armed with a cast that includes Lee Pace, Jared Harris, and many others, the Apple TV+ show has made a decent show of it, with the second season getting higher marks from fans than the first.

All that said, I don’t feel like Foundation has a ton of buzz surrounding it; I don’t see much marketing nor do I hear a lot of people talking about it. That’s true for a few Apple TV+ shows; For All Mankind is another sci-fi series that doesn’t get talked about much, and yet that show is its fourth season. Apple sticks by its series.

There’s no word on when Foundation season 3 might premiere, but given that the show just got renewed, I’d expect it sometime in 2025.
