The second season of HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon is officially on the way. We have a trailer and everything:
Not only that, but the cast members are starting to talk! We haven’t yet heard from heavy hitters like Emma D’Arcy (Rhaenyra Targaryen) or Matt Smith (Daemon Targaryen) but supporting player Max Wrottesley — who played the Kingsguard knight Ser Lorent Marbrand in season 1 — spoke to Voice of Oldtown about what to expect.
You might remember Ser Lorent as one of the Kingsguard knights that Daemon talked to in the final episode of House of the Dragon season 1. Actually, “talked to” is putting it politely. Daemon threatened Ser Lorent and his fellow Kingsguard member with immolation if they did not choose to side with his wife Rhaenyra in the upcoming conflict against King Aegon II Targaryen for the Iron Throne:
Ser Lorent is the follically challenged Kingsguard knight in this scene. He only showed up for the first time in Episode 8 of House of the Dragon season 1, but will have a bigger role to play this time around. “I suppose I felt more embedded within the show…and I got to follow far with the narratives,” Wrottesley said.
And he’ll be spending most of that time with Rhaenyra. Ser Lorent is officially a member of her Queensguard, which means acting alongside Emma D’Arcy. “Well, I spent a lot of time around the Painted Table,” Wrottesley remembered. “We spent a lot of hours in there. Having good company makes the day go really well, so having people like Nicholas Jones and Phil Daniels and Emma and, you know, and other new cast members I won’t mention names of…it’s a happy gang…we keep each other laughing quite a lot.”
"I’m really lucky to work with people like Emma who is extraordinary and always, you know, turns up to work so prepared and so ready to kick ass…The pressure is not on my shoulders, the pressure is on the big leads and on [showrunner Ryan Condal] and the people who are kind of, I suppose carrying it. So for me, it’s just been a joy to be a part of [this]. More pressure like this, please. I’ll take plenty more."
As we remember, Rhaenyra is using her home of Dragonstone as a base to wage her war. We saw a fair amount of it in season 1, not to mention on Game of Thrones when Rhaenyra’s descendent Daenerys Targaryen took up residence there, but Wrottesley says there’s much more of the island left to be explored.
We’ll see “more of Dragonstone” in House of the Dragon season 2
“This year, I think people are going to be excited to see more of Dragonstone,” he said. “The set is bigger, better. There’s more of it. So people get more of a sense of what life at Dragonstone is like.”
In general, Wrottesley seems very excited for people to see what he and the rest of the House of the Dragon team have done with season 2, which makes me excited to see it. “Like, it’s a big show,” he said. “Like people have got a lot to look forward to…I think people are gonna be really excited for what they see.”
House of the Dragon season 2 premieres next summer on HBO and Max.
