Disney is making an animated Black Panther spinoff show
By Dan Selcke
Black Panther remains one of Marvel’s most successful movies, both financially (it made well over a billion dollars at the box office) and critically (it’s the only Marvel movie to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars). Its sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, was a big hit too, even after the passing of original star Chadwick Boseman.
Now Disney is moving forward with the franchise. According to Variety, they’re working on a new Disney+ series called Eyes of Wakanda. “Throughout Wakandan history, brave warriors have been tasked to travel the world retrieving dangerous vibranium artifacts,” reads the official logline. “This is their story.”
Eyes of Wakanda was quietly revealed earlier this week in a sizzle reel showing off some of Marvel’s upcoming animated projects, including X-Men 97, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, and the second season of What If…? The first season of What If…? — where episode explores a different part of the vast Marvel multiverse — had an episode where an alternate universe version of T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman in one of his final performances) took over the role of Star-Lord from Guardians of the Galaxy. We don’t know if Eyes of Wakanda will use the same animation style, but it could give the team a place to start.
Variety says that Black Panther director Ryan Coogler will be “involved” in the show. There have been rumblings about some kind of Black Panther spinoff show for a while, although many fans expected something live-action. We don’t know if Eyes of Wakanda was the only thing Disney was planning all along, if there was something else in the pipeline but the studio had a change of heart given the recent glut of Marvel content, or if a live-action spinoff is still coming.
The sizzle reel featuring Eyes of Wakanda was thus far only shown off at this week’s event, but we imagine it will be released to the rest of us soon enough. In the meantime, the second season of What If…? premieres on Disney+ on December 22. One episode will drop per day until the season is over.
