It is a truth universally acknowledged that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is in a bit of a bind right now. New movie The Marvels bombed, the TV shows on Disney+ have been hit and miss, and interest in spandex-clad superheroes just isn’t what it used to be.

In this environment, Marvel is innovating. For instance, its next Disney+ show — Echo, which premieres on January 10 — is the first Marvel series to be released under the Marvel Spotlight Banner, which according to executive Brad Winderbaum “gives us a platform to bring more grounded, character-driven stories to the screen, and in the case of Echo, focusing on street-level stakes over larger MCU continuity.”

So the Marvel Spotlight shows are intended to be a bit more user-friendly; you shouldn’t have to watch all 800 previous Marvel shows and movies to understand them.

That brings us to Daredevil: Born Again, a revival of the Netflix Daredevil show starring Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio that ran from 2015 to 2018. This new series will run on Disney+, and it sounds like Disney wants to make sure it’s approachable. Or at the least, D’Onofrio answered in the affirmative when he was asked on BroBible’s Post Credit Podcast whether the show would run under the Marvel Spotlight Banner.

“For sure,” D’Onofrio said. “That’s my opinion, I imagine it would be. Nobody has said, ‘Hey, did you know this? This is happening’ — nobody said that. But it is of the same tone and feel [as Echo].”

"The attention that the big bosses are giving to it is extraordinary and Charlie [Cox] and I are just amazed at how much they care about this series. I can’t imagine it being treated any less."

The top brass at Disney has been giving the show a lot of attention, although not necessarily the kind the producers might want. Back in October, we learned that Marvel was scrapping a lot of the work they’d done on Daredevil: Born Again so far and retooling the show from the ground up.

It’s possible that part of the retooling effort is to make Daredevil more approachable. I can envision a scenario where the show was heavily tied in with the rest of the MCU, Marvel saw that was going out of favor and decided to change things so watching the show no longer required homework. Things are changing at Marvel.

Obviously there’s no release date for Daredevil: Born Again as of yet. Smart money is on 2025.
