Deadline reports that A24 is joining forces with legendary video game producer Hideo Kojima to create a live-action movie adaptation of Kojima’s celebrated game Death Stranding.

Death Stranding made huge waves upon its release for its hyper-realistic renderings of its star-studded cast. Players play as Sam Porter Bridges (The Walking Dead’s Norman Reedus), who is tasked with fostering connections among disparate communities in a post-apocalyptic United States. The game also had plenty of other big names involved, such as Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, Guillermo del Toro and Margaret Qualley.

A24 is known for their exceptionally well-crafted films. Considering Kojima’s similar focus on craft in his own field, this seems like a match made in heaven. “A24 was born into this world about 10 years ago, their presence is singular within the industry, they are like no other,” Kojima said in a statement. “The films they are delivering to the world are high in quality and very innovative. I have been attracted to their creations and they have even inspired my own work.”

Hideo Kojima and A24 are a perfect match

Hideo Kojima is a very well-respected name in entertainment; his first breakout title was the Metal Gear video game series, which pioneered the stealth action style of gameplay and featured a mind-bending story about global military conspiracies. His work is pretty synonymous with high-craft storytelling, just like A24. For Kojima, the studio’s “innovative approach to storytelling” was what drew him into the partnership.

“There are a lot of ‘game adaptation films’ out there but what we are creating is not just a direct translation of the game,” Kojima said. “The intention is that our audience will not only be fans of the games, but our film will be for anyone who loves cinema. We are creating a Death Stranding universe that has never been seen before, achievable only through the medium of film, it will be born.”

The Death Stranding movie is still in the early stages, but we’ll be curious to see how it progresses. My big question is: will Norman Reedus reprise his role as Sam? He has to, right? Why recast a role like that when you’ve got a well-loved actor like Reedus ready to go?

In the meantime, a Death Stranding sequel is in the works at Kojima Productions. Beyond Death Stranding, Kojima’s other upcoming game project, OD, was just unveiled at this year’s Game Awards. For that one, Kojima is collaborating with Nope writer/director Jordan Peele; it stars Sophia Lillis (It) and Hunter Schafer (Euphoria).
