5 fantasy and sci-fi shows in danger of cancellation in 2026

When it comes to genres, there are two that seem the hardest to keep on the air. Fantasy and sci-fi shows are expensive to produce, and if the viewership isn’t there, it leads to networks and streamers deciding not to keep going with it.

This leads to disappointment for us as viewers. We get invested in the world building and the character storylines, only to end up left with questions and cliffhangers. Fortunately, some of the fantasy and sci-fi shows from 2025 did wrap things up well enough for their shows to work as series finales, but we’d prefer if we got something new from them.

Here are the five fantasy and sci-fi shows we’re worried won’t be back in 2026, and one of them may surprise you.

SurrealEstate

The Syfy paranormal series has brought some excellent storylines over the course of three seasons. We’ve seen characters grow in terms of work and personal development, and they’ve certainly faced some scary and unimaginable spirits and events in their lives.

SurrealEstate season 3 debuted back in April 2025 with the finale airing in June 2025. There was some closure for the majority of characters at the end, so if this ends up being canceled, it won’t be too bad. However, it’s disappointing when it comes to such a fun show.

Right now, there are a lot of mixed pieces of news about renewals and cancellations of the series, but Syfy hasn’t outright said what it is doing. With a lot of its sci-fi shows ending around the third or fourth seasons, we could see an official cancellation notice coming in 2026.

Revival

We’ll stick with Syfy for now, as there’s another series that we’re worried about. It’s all about Revival, the fantasy horror starring Melanie Scrofano. This show was an adaptation of a graphic novel, bringing a few twists and turns to the story to make it work for TV, but at the heart of it, the series was all about family.

Dana, one of the deputies in her small town, was suddenly faced with the dead coming back to life. This event became known as Revival Day, and suddenly, all these people who were once dead are made into second-class citizens in their own town. When it turns out that one of the Revivers was murdered, there’s a mission to find out who murdered her and why.

Revival didn’t quite get the linear ratings that a show like this needs to keep going. However, Syfy has been known to try in the past, but considering there has been radio silence since it wrapped up its first season in August 2025, things aren’t looking good.

The Rig

Moving onto Prime Video, it has a fair few shows that are on the potential cancellation list. When it comes to supernatural shows, The Rig is at the top. It follows a group of Scottish oil rig workers who get ready to return home. However, a mysterious mist surrounds the rig, and soon they find themselves trapped with some sort of supernatural entity.

The Rig aired its second season back in January 2025. Since there, there has been no update on it at all, and this isn’t good. After all, Prime Video usually only waits a month or two before deciding on the fate of its shows. Countdown and Butterfly have already been canceled after arriving in the summer.

So, with that in mind, it looks like The Rig has been quietly canceled. We may get an update in 2026, or it may just be one of those shows that remains forever pending.

Castlevania: Nocturne

After the success of Castlevania, it wasn’t surprising to see that a sequel series was created. However, Castlevania: Nocturne didn’t quite get the same following, despite the fantasy show being one of the best on the air!

The sequel is set in 1792, following Richter Belmont and his adopted sister Maria Renard taking on a threat on an apocalyptic level. They need to find friends who will help them take down the Vampire Messiah before all hell breaks loose. And it was certainly a fun adventure for two seasons.

Castlevania: Nocturne released its second season back in January 2025. Like with The Rig, there has been radio silence ever since. Netflix has done this in the past, quietly cancelling a popular show and just moving on. We fear that’s the case with this one as well.

Gen V

I know that this is a bit of a controversial show to put on the list, but here me out. When it comes to The Boys and its spinoff Gen V, renewals have usually come in quickly. In fact, many renewals have happened before the arrival of new seasons. So, the fact that Gen V season 3 wasn’t confirmed shortly after the epic second season isn’t good news.

That being said, it’s possible that Amazon is just waiting for The Boys season 5 to air. The Gen V season 2 finale did set up for everyone on that show to come into the final season of The Boys. A renewal could lead to spoilers for how The Boys ends, and Amazon won’t want that.

There is a benefit to the world being completely connected. It means that cast options are locked in for a little while longer. Hopefully, we don’t have to wait too much longer after The Boys season 5 to get news about Gen V, but depending on how that show ends, it could lead to the end of this college-based spinoff.
