With the new Harry Potter series slowly approaching us on HBO, it gets me more excited day after day. The company has said time and time again that it will be a much more loyal adaptation of the famous novels by J.K. Rowling, and it makes me wonder—what characters are we going to see that we didn’t really get to see in the movies?
That’s what we’ll talk about today, with sixcharacters I am dying to see.
Peeves The Poltergeist
Okay, so maybe this isn’t a “hope” because we already know Peeves will appear in the series. Peter Serafinowicz will play him. The character didn’t show up in the feature films at all but, thankfully, will have a role in the show.
For those who don’t know who Peeves is, he’s a Poltergeist that isn’t a former spirit. He is literally created from chaos magic and everything else surrounding the castle. He often plays pranks on students, but he's loyal to the school and its headmaster, Albus Dumbledore. In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Peeves actively worked with the students to pull pranks on Dolores Umbridge to get her out.
He is also afraid of the Bloody Baron, the ghost of Slytherin, which is low-key hilarious.
But I put Peeves on this list because I don’t just want him to appear in the show. I really want him to play an active role. I want him to be a character fans end up loving from the moment they meet him and to be surprised by the depth of this poltergeist, despite his reputation for pranks. If we could have something like this, I would be forever grateful.
Charlie Weasley
There are several Weasley children that we saw in the movies, including the famous Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint). We even attended one of their weddings in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. But there was one who was pretty much cut entirely, and that’s Charlie Weasley.
Charlie is the second-oldest Weasley brother, and he's a dragon tamer in Romania who built his entire life around the beasts. We don’t really see him a lot in the earlier books, as he plays a bigger role later on. But having a brother as a freaking tamer of dragons is so cool and something I could easily see HBO accomplishing. They have dragons on dragons for House of the Dragon—they can afford one more dragon.
The show has hinted that he’ll appear at some point, thanks to a cheeky little Instagram post that said he’s “currently in Romania,” so he hasn’t been cast yet.
Look, I need to see him somehow. I would love to see dragons involved more in this show. It could really expand the show's storyline.
Frank and Alice Longbottom
Another two characters I’d love to see are Frank and Alice Longbottom. They are Neville’s parents, and honestly, they play a pretty small but important role in Neville’s life as well as in the story in the books.
They had a brief "appearance" in a photo featured in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, but we never see them in person. In the books, we see that they’re under care at St. Mungo’s, the wizarding hospital, for losing their minds due to the torture they went through while part of the Order of the Phoenix and taking on the Dark Lord.
It’s a harrowing moment that the core trio witnesses when they see Neville visiting his parents with his grandmother, and it really speaks to his character. It’s something I’d love to see in the adaptation somehow.
Rodolphus Lestrange
This is more for my sanity, but I really want to see Rodolphus Lestrange in the show. In the movie, Bellatrix (Helena Bonham Carter) is wild. Still, it almost felt like she was pining for Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) in so many ways and was just some independent psycho who did everything herself.
In the books, she is Rodolphus Lestrange's wife. He’s a Death Eater and was placed in prison after he helped torture Neville’s parents. The films cut him entirely. While he and Bellatrix didn’t have a love-filled marriage, their dynamic was cut entirely from the movies, even though he plays a bigger part in the later books. I want to see so much more. He was part of some of the darkest moments from the books.
Teddy Lupin
Last but not least, my biggest request is to see Teddy Lupin, who is the son of Remus Lupin and Tonks. We see that Tonks (Natalia Tena) is pregnant in the films, but we never actually see Teddy. In the books, Teddy is alive, and when his parents die, it’s a chilling moment when we’re reminded that he’s now an orphan, just like Harry. He needs someone to protect him.
It’s a stark reminder of the cost of war and also a reminder of the next generation of wizards. He won’t appear until much later in the show, but a girl can dream that he’ll show up.
