House of the Dragon introduced some of the best dragon sequences of the series in season 3, and there are even more on the way in season 4.
The Battle of the Gullet was a big moment for dragons. Moondancer and Vermax (RIP!) played a big role. We got to meet Sheepstealer for the first time in the series. Sheepstealer played an incredibly big part in the story. We also got to meet Tessarion, although briefly, at Tumbleton. Caraxes and Syrax were joined by Vermithor and Silverwing for the Fall of King's Landing in season 3.
While we had some great moments with the dragons in season 3, there were more than a few dragons sitting on the sidelines during pivotal points in the Dance of the Dragons. Worse, there were a few dragons that were basically missing all season. Vhagar, where were you, girl?
The good news is that House of the Dragon season 4 will likely be full of dragons. There are so many important moments in this story to come, and almost all of them involve dragons. To get everyone excited about what's to come, I shared eight dragons who will play an even bigger role in the final season of House of the Dragon.
Vhagar
After flying Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) to Harrenhal and roasting a few groups along the way, Vhagar is largely absent in House of the Dragon season 3. Of course, Aemond is injured taking the castle from the Strong family and is out of commission. Vhagar is the biggest dragon in Westeros, and the air doesn't have calories, so naturally, she has to eat.
Throughout most of season 3, Vhagar is rumored to be flying around the country, snacking and surviving. While I love that for her, I definitely missed the Vhagar's presence this season. Luckily, she's going to play a massive part in the battles to come in season 4.
If Ryan Condal and the writers stay true to the source material, Vhagar is in for the fight of her life with Aemond against Daemon (Matt Smith) and Caraxes in the Battle Above the Gods Eye. In terms of big aerial battles left, Vhagar vs. Caraxes is the one we should all be looking forward to. It's going to make Rook's Rest look like child's play.
Caraxes
Speaking of Caraxes, this is the dragon we saw the most, I think, in season 3. Daemon and Caraxes were flying all over the Seven Kingdoms. They were also a major part of the First Battle of Tumbleton, which ended in a victory for the Greens, although they sustained heavy, heavy losses.
It's going to be interesting to see how Condal and the writers play out Daemon and Caraxes' story from here. In Fire & Blood, Daemon and Caraxes are not at Tumbleton. Later, Daemon teams up with Nettles and Sheepstealer to travel around looking for Vhagar and Aemond. When that takes a turn, Daemon eventually finds Aemond and, as mentioned, leads to the massive aerial battle.
I think we've basically confirmed that the Nettles storyline, even though it was largely given to Rhaena, won't happen the way it does in Fire & Blood. I don't think we've seen the last of Rhaena (Phoebe Campbell), but I would be surprised if Daemon and Rhaena, now, go looking for Vhagar after everything that's happened.
With that said, I'm absolutely positive we're going to see Daemon and Caraxes fight Aemond and Vhagar in season 4.
Syrax
It's been a minute since Syrax has had much to do in House of the Dragon. Of course, Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy) flew Syrax into King's Landing at the beginning of season 3. We also saw the big scene when Syrax and Seasmoke team up with Caraxes to put Sheepstealer in his place near the end of the season.
There's no doubt that we should see more of Syrax in season 4. It's not going to be a lot more than season 3, but I have a feeling that it will be impactful.
In Fire & Blood, Syrax is in the dragonpits when the people of King's Landing grow tired of their queen and take matters into their own hands. Syrax is a big part of that devastating sequence that leads to a lot of death and destruction.
It's going to be interesting to see if that's how Condal and the writers choose to include Syrax in that part of the story or if Syrax will be heading into battle with Rhaenyra in season 4. I feel like one of those two things will happen, maybe even both, depending on how they want this story to end. I do feel quite confident that Syrax will have more to do in season 4 than we saw in season 3.
Sunfyre
Sunfyre! I love a good resurrection arc, and Sunfyre got that in season 3. After falling in the Battle of Rook's Rest, Sunfyre was thought to be dead. All but Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) believed the dragon was dead, but apparently, he was in some kind of dragon coma, nursing his wounds, and healing up. Then, he woke up at the right time to torch some of the soldiers and save Aegon's life.
The last time we see Sunfyre, the dragon is crashing into Harrenhal before Aegon confronts his brother. We know Sunfyre isn't 100%, like Aegon, but they both still have a lot of fight left in them heading into season 4.
Of the dragons left, Sunfyre might have the most big moments if Condal and the writers follow the events of Fire & Blood quite closely in season 4. Sunfyre has to assist in getting Aegon to Dragonstone where a big, epic aerial fight happens with Baela and Moondancer before Sunfyre basically ends the Dance of the Dragons.
Will season 4 play out that way? We'll have to wait and see, but we will see more of Sunfyre in season 4. There's no doubt about that.
Moondancer
House of the Dragon season 3 opened with the Battle of the Gullet, and Moondancer was a big part of that battle. Of course, Moondancer saved Prince Jacaerys (Harry Collett) and Vermax a couple of times in that battle, but Jace and Vermax die anyway.
From there, Baela (Bethany Antonia) and Moondancer are largely reserved for flying the country looking for Vhagar an other dragons in season 3.
While that will probably continue for a good portion of season 4, Moondancer is part of a key fight with Sunfyre that determines the course of the entire civil war. That should happen in season 4 unless the writers get really loose with this story and go for a bigger conclusion to the civil war. Even if they do that, which is not in Fire & Blood, Moondancer should be involved in key parts of that battle.
Seasmoke
Addam of Hull (Clinton Liberty) and Seasmoke basically had nothing to do all season in House of the Dragon season 3. Sure, they showed up at the Battle of the Gullet to finish the job, which we didn't really see. They also searched from the skies while everyone looked for Lord Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint).
Later, they looked around for Vhagar and were part of the scene where they captured Rhaena and beat up Sheepstealer, but that was about it. While Ulf White (Tom Bennett) and Silverwing and Hugh Hammer (Kieran Bew) and Vermithor were at Tumbleton, Addam and Seasmoke were not.
That's all going to change in season 4. We're going back to Tumbleton, and Addam should be tapped to lead Rhaenyra's forces against what's left of the Greens. Seasmoke has a massive role in the Second Battle of Tumbleton. The dragon goes toe-to-toe with Vermithor and Tessarion.
I think we're going to get the Second Battle of Tumbleton. It's a turning point in this civil war, especially with everything that happened in the First Battle of Tumbleton. Condal and the writers could change the location because we just saw Tumbleton, but that would be quite a big swing.
Tessarion
We met Tessarion the Blue Queen in season 3, but there were a lot of changes to Daeron and Tessarion's story. In Fire & Blood, Daeron (Benjamin Evan-Ainsworth) and Tessarion are already well-known for their battle heroics by the time the First Battle of Tumbleton happens. They're also in the field for the battle, trying to win the day for the Greens.
That does not happen in House of the Dragon. As mentioned, the Second Battle of Tumbleton should be a big deal in season 4. It will be interesting what changes are made, but Daeron should be up against Addam and Seasmoke in that battle if it plays out how it should.
Sadly, we probably won't get to see a lot of Tessarion, though. This is really the last big moment for the Blue Queen, but again, Condal and the writers have made big changes to this story before. We'll see how it all plays out in season 4.
Vermithor
Last but not least, Vermithor is the final dragon that we should see a lot more of in House of the Dragon season 4. We were expecting to see a lot of Vermithor in season 3, but that did not happen.
For those who don't know, Hugh Hammer and Vermithor join Ulf and Silvering and switch sides in the First Battle of Tumbleton. Ulf and Hugh burn Tumbleton to the ground and win the day for the Greens. Hugh was involved in the battle, but he didn't become a traitor, even though he was supposed to be back in King's Landing.
This is going to set up Hugh to be marked as a traitor anyway, though. Why was he at Tumbleton? Why didn't he kill Ulf and Silverwing? Rhaenyra is going to be super pissed about this. It opens up a lot of questions about Hugh's story and how much Vermithor will be involved in season 4.
Vermithor is still such a force, so I can't imagine he just flies off into the sunset. Hugh and Vermithor will be involved in the battles to come, and it will probably all go down at the Second Battle of Tumbleton.
Those are the eight dragons we should see a lot more of in House of the Dragon season 4. They all have significant parts to play in the remainder of the Dance of the Dragons, although some more than others. We could see some of the other dragons like Silverwing and Sheepstealer and others who haven't been introduced yet in season 4, too, but these eight are clearly the ones to watch in the finale season of the hit series.
