House of the Dragon season 4 release date is all but certain based on HBO’s history

House of the Dragon season 4 is still a ways off, but HBO’s release pattern gives us a very strong idea of when the final season could premiere.

Another season of House of the Dragon has come and gone, and the finale certainly leaves fans with a lot to think about, and we’re going to have plenty of time to digest all that goes down in the episode. Now, don’t go running off; there are no spoilers from the season 3 finale to be found here, as we don’t want to take away the magic of seeing the finale. We do, however, want to make like Helaena and look into the future and what’s to come.

Throughout the third season of House of the Dragon there has been a lot of speculation about whether this season is the final season. Thankfully, season 3 is not the end of the run for the show, but we are in the endgame for the show.

Ryan Condal has made it clear that season 4 will be the last season for the show and has been written as the end of House of the Dragon. This is not something we see changing, as Condal has made it clear that season 4 is the end of the show and brings an end to the story they set out to tell. This was something he reiterated again earlier this summer.

"We're actively writing. We actually are starting to turn drafts over to HBO. This is early; we will keep iterating. I don't put the script down until they actually take it away from me in production. We're as far ahead as we've ever been at this point in crafting a new season, while we're still [working on post-production on] the old one. That goes to show the machine is up and running and it's on its feet. But it's also the fourth season—the end, the final act—in a story we've been waiting to tell for many years. We're all really excited about doing it,” Condal shared

As he mentioned, work is well underway on season 4 and the final chapter is currently making good progress, which is great since HBO has already locked in the show’s return year.

House of the Dragon season 4 has been confirmed for 2028

Months before House of the Dragon season 3 had even premiered, HBO confirmed its release timeline for House of the Dragon season 4 as part of a massive announcement designed to showcase the strength of the Game of Thrones line-up.

In an Instagram post shared in November 2025, HBO promised fans a return to Westeros every year through at least 2028 by promoting the release of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1 and House of the Dragon season 3 in 2026, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 in 2027, and House of the Dragon season 4 in 2028. This confirmed fans’ theory that we’d once again have a two-year gap between seasons of House of the Dragon, which was honestly a relief.

While we never doubted that HBO would attempt to avoid further delays, you truly never know with bigger shows, and we’ve seen some hit series take much longer breaks—after all, Stranger Things made us wait three years between its last two seasons. HBO is also more of a creature of habit than Netflix, which is great for fans as its release pattern makes the season 4 premiere date easy to predict.

We’ll be shocked if June 18, 2028, is not the House of the Dragon season 4 release

You heard it here first; remember that when 2028 rolls around. There is a 99% chance that House of the Dragon season 4 will premiere on HBO and HBO Max on June 18, 2028. This is not just some random guess but is based on the release pattern HBO has followed for House of the Dragon’s last two seasons.

After debuting House of the Dragon in late August back in 2022, HBO shifted the show’s release up earlier in the year so that the seasons have unfolded over the course of the summer and wrapped in early August. Both season 2 and season 3 were released in June, which makes it seem highly likely that House of the Dragon season 4 will also premiere in June.

Interestingly, HBO hasn’t just debuted the last two seasons of House of the Dragon in the same month; it’s also chosen to kick the seasons off on the third Sunday of the month in both instances. Given the pattern HBO has put into place, it would stand to reason that season 4 will also release on the third Sunday in June 2028, which happens to fall on June 18—which puts it directly between season 2’s June 16 release and season 3’s June 21 release.

Now, it’s important to stress that this is just an educated guess based on HBO’s release patterns, and we’ll likely be waiting sometime for the official House of the Dragon season 4 release date to be confirmed. However, we won’t be shocked at all to see June 18, 2028, emerge as the release date in the future, as HBO definitely seems to recognize that if a release strategy is working, there’s no point in changing it up.
