House of the Dragon season 4 officially confirmed as final season, supersized season on the table

HBO's boss doubles down on season 4 being the last, though a supersized final season could be in the cards for House of the Dragon.

There's not much time left to wait before House of the Dragon season 3 premieres on HBO this summer. The next chapter of the Game of Thrones prequel series will be here before we know it, and the newest addition to the franchise, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, has been a very welcome holdover to enjoy during the final stretch of the wait.

Thankfully, back in November 2025, HBO officially renewed House of the Dragon season 4 and set a tentative release window for the season in 2028. The series' showrunner Ryan Condal has stated in the past that season 4 would be the final season, but the network hadn't yet backed up that statement to make it officially. Well, HBO's boss Casey Bloys has now doubled down on season 4 being the endgame.

"Yes, that is the idea. The idea has always been to follow the history of the Targaryens. If you know the books, you know how the Targaryens end up. So there is a natural end to this particular history of that House of the Targaryens," shared in an extensive interview with Deadline.

The latest House of the Dragon development won't come as much of a surprise to devoted fans, who have basically been expecting the series to wrap up in a shorter timeframe than its predecessor. Like Bloys stated, there's a natural ending to the story House of the Dragon is telling, which means there would always be a limited number of seasons to wrap up this prequel saga.

However, just because season 4 will be the final season of the series, that doesn't mean that we won't be getting more of the story. What does that mean? Well, Deadline prodded Bloys for additional details about what the future could hold for the final season and whether that could be a supersized farewell. Tellingly, Bloys didn't outright say no, leaving that decision up to Condal.

"Ryan is working, like any show like this; he is finishing post on season 3 and working with the writers on what season 4 looks like. I don’t know where he’s landed on the episode count yet," Bloys said.

For comparison's sake, the first season of House of the Dragon contained 10 episodes, while the second season only had eight episodes. The third season will also have eight episodes, and it sounds like it's very well possible that the fourth and final season could have more than eight. But what does "supersized" mean in the context of a streaming series that's only had eight to 10 episodes?

Perhaps season 4 could have anywhere from nine to 12 episodes, though we should probably manage our expectations until Condal shares his plans and teases (and/or reveals) an episode count. "Supersized" is relative and also isn't even a word that Condal has used to describe the season. But it's still promising that that possibility appears to be on the table at all.

The most recent House of the Dragon season 4 update came directly from Condal in December 2025 when the showrunner revealed that work had started "in earnest" on the final season. He explained that writing as started on season 4's episodes and expressed his excitement that progress is already being made before season 3 has even been unleashed to the world.

We'll share more news and updates on House of the Dragon seasons 3 and 4 as they're revealed by HBO and Condal.
