House of the Dragon season 4 gets encouraging update from showrunner Ryan Condal

House of the Dragon's final season may be further along in development than fans initially thought.

House of the Dragon season 3 might not have been released just yet, but it is already time to look at what lies ahead. After all, Westeros waits for neither man nor tale. Season 4 of the iconic HBO show was officially greenlit in late 2025, and it was eventually announced that it would act as the final entry in the series. The story of the Targaryens before Game of Thrones is coming to an end, but plenty of action still remains.

While audiences worldwide gear up to watch the long-awaited Battle of the Gullet, the creative team behind House of the Dragon is already writing season 4. Fortunately, it seems the scripts are developing even better than anticipated, signaling that no unexpected delays should come our way.

House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal says that they are 'far ahead' in crafting season 4

House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal talked about how far along the team is in the development of season 4 during a recent press conference (as reported by Gold Derby):

"We're actively writing. We actually are starting to turn drafts over to HBO," said Condal. "This is early, we will keep iterating. I don't put the script down until they actually take it away from me in production. We're as far ahead as we've ever been at this point in crafting a new season, while we're still [working on post-production on] the old one. That goes to show the machine is up and running and it's on its feet. But it's also the fourth season — the end; the final act — in a story we've been waiting to tell for many years. We're all really excited about doing it."

While there's no release date for House of the Dragon season 4, HBO has already confirmed that it will release in 2028, ensuring the usual two-year gap between seasons. But is it possible that HBO surprises us with a late 2027 release? It's certainly within the realm of possibility if Condal's comments are anything to go by, and Deadline even suggests this could be the case. However, there are other big releases to take into consideration.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms — another Game of Thrones prequel series — has been renewed for a second season, which will come our way sometime in 2027. As such, HBO could prefer to give us yearly releases of one of its most acclaimed franchises rather than dropping everything in the same year. That would mean that early 2028 would be the ideal release window for House of the Dragon season 4.

Condal also gave more insight into why audiences have to wait so long for new episodes, stating that pre-production and shooting take a year, without taking into account writing duties. Factoring in almost another year of post-production, the result is a two-year wait between seasons:

"It's a long downtime between seasons. It takes a long time to make the show. Prep and shooting of the show — and this is after scripts are written — take a year, and then it takes seven to eight months to make dragons. So, do the math. It's not possible to come out every year."

Fortunately, it seems the wait for seasons 3 and 4 will prove to be worth it. Fans have been very vocal about how slow House of the Dragon has been up to its halfway point, but this was always how the story was meant to play out, as mentioned by Condal: "We have a plan, we're going to stick to it, we're not going to listen to the noise in between." Now, we'll witness the last two acts of this ambitious story, starting with the depiction of one of the biggest conflicts in Westeros' history: the Battle of the Gullet.

The Dance of the Dragons civil war is in full swing now, and the bloodshed won't stop any time soon. Fortunately, the beginning of the end is nearly here, and it won't be long before we find out what surprises lie in store for the Targaryens and the many houses of Westeros.

House of the Dragon season 3 premieres June 21 on HBO and HBO Max.
