Who doesn't love an early show renewal? It's like finding a bonus level in your favorite game. Just when you thought the fun was over, here comes even more excitement! HBO is gearing up to start airing the highly anticipated Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, early next year, and rumors are already circulating that the network has given the green light to both a season 2 and a season 3.
While there hasn’t been an official announcement from HBO about continuing the show beyond season 1, trusted industry insider DanielRPK claims that the network has already renewed the fantasy series for two additional installments. As reported by Redanian Intelligence, DanielRPK also claims that each new season is expected to consist of six episodes, with runtimes of roughly 30 to 35 minutes apiece.
However, none of this should be that surprising if you've been following the show closely. Back in March 2025, series co-creator George R.R. Martin revealed in an interview with Collider that he and the rest of the show's creative team were working on a second season. Then, there are the comments that HBO executive Francesca Orsi made just a month earlier in an interview with Deadline, hinting that the network was already mapping out a three-season arc.
While she emphasized that nothing had been picked up officially at the time, she made it clear that the team was treating seasons 2 and 3 as part of a larger, cohesive plan to adapt all three of Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas.
So it looks like HBO is playing the long game with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, aiming to bring the whole trilogy of Dunk and Egg adventures to the screen. The network is probably waiting to announce the show's official renewal closer to the first season's premiere or even after it starts airing to get a feel of the audience's reaction and viewership numbers. However, it's clear that HBO is confident in the series’ potential.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place 100 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and follows the unlikely adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall, a humble but brave hedge knight, and his young squire Egg. Peter Claffey (Vikings: Valhalla, Bad Sisters) stars as Ser Duncan the Tall, while Dexter Sol Ansell (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, Emmerdale) takes on the role of Egg. Also in the main cast are Finn Bennett, Bertie Carvel, Tanzyn Crawford, Daniel Ings, and Sam Spruell.
