The tale of Dunk and Egg is just getting started, and HBO is already rumored to be making major moves behind the scenes. The Game of Thrones prequel series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is slated to start airing its first season on HBO sometime early next year. In addition, a second and third season are reportedly in the works. While this is already good news, we've just learned of an even more exciting development that we can't wait to share. Seasons 2 and 3 will reportedly be shot back-to-back!
Ira Parker and George R. R. Martin created A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Set a hundred years before the events of Game of Thrones, this series adaptation of Martin’s novellas Tales of Dunk and Egg follows two unlikely companions journeying through Westeros. Ser Duncan the Tall, a brave but inexperienced knight, and his small yet quick-witted squire, Egg, find themselves caught in perilous adventures.
Peter Claffey stars as Ser Duncan the Tall, otherwise known as Dunk. On the other hand, Dexter Sol Ansell plays the role of Egg. Talented actors such as Finn Bennett, Bertie Carvel, Tanzyn Crawford, Daniel Ings, and Sam Spruell are also in the cast.
With principal photography having wrapped last year, the first season is currently deep in post-production. In a recent report from industry Insider DanielRPK, he claimed that HBO has already renewed the fantasy series for a second and third installment. However, keep in mind that neither the network nor the show's creative team has officially confirmed these renewals yet. Like the first season, both potential installments are expected to have six episodes each that run for about 30 to 35 minutes apiece.
After news broke about the short episode counts and runtimes, Game of Thrones fans were quick to express their disappointment and frustration on Reddit. Some even said they won't be watching the show. Although we would've liked more episodes and longer runtimes, we're trying to remain hopeful that the end product will deliver and stay true to Martin’s vision.
According to Redanian Intelligence, writing for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms seasons 2 and 3 has already started. The news outlet also shares that the show is moving forward with an ambitious plan to film both seasons back-to-back, and that production is expected to begin in early 2026 (Q1). However, the news outlet also made sure to note that this production schedule isn’t final and that things could change or be delayed. But they believe that if everything goes as planned, then fans could be looking at a 2027 release for season 2 and a 2028 release for the third season.
If HBO really does end up officially renewing the fantasy series for a second and third season, then the third installment will likely be the last. HBO executive Francesca Orsi previously mentioned in an interview with Deadline that the idea for the show is to adapt all three of the Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas across three seasons. The first season adapts the first novella, The Hedge Knight, while season 2 is expected to cover The Sworn Sword. That would leave The Mystery Knight for season 3.
