A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 reaches major filming milestone

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 takes a big step forward as filming wraps for one of its stars, signaling the HBO prequel is closer than ever to its 2027 debut.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 might not be coming to HBO until 2027, but the second season of the Emmy-nominated Game of Thrones prequel just reached a major milestone, putting it one step closer to the finish line!

On August 3, star Dexter Sol Ansell took to Instagram to announce that he’s officially wrapped filming on the second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. While Sol Ansell shared the audio of his season wrap being announced on set, he blacked out the video, which suggests he was unable to share the footage from the set due to potential season 2 spoilers. Regardless, it’s a major milestone for the second season, as it means the show is nearing the end of filming and will likely wrap production sometime this week.

Production on the season was originally expected to wrap sometime in June; however, HBO boss Casey Bloys revealed just last month that filming was still underway and entering the home stretch. It seems likely that the historic rainfall that caused flooding in Gran Canaria, Spain, which forced the show to move production, might have set the show’s filming schedule back slightly, but thankfully this delay was not a lengthy one.

With Sol Ansell having now wrapped, we imagine his co-lead, Peter Claffey, will be wrapping any day now as well, and that production will officially come to an end on season 2. From there, the show will enter post-production as Ira Parker and the team work to put the episodes together and prepare the season for release. And thankfully, the production delay has not impacted the release window for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2.

Parker confirmed in late July that the plan is still to release A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 within the first half of 2027. It will be interesting is to see when exactly in the first half of the year season 2 might release.

Given that HBO will be debuting Harry Potter season 1 on Christmas Day and releasing episodes weekly, it seems highly unlikely that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 will premiere in January like season 1. It’s possible that we could see the show premiere in early February timed to the season finale of Harry Potter, but it’s also possible that HBO could choose to shift A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 closer to summer.

Regardless of when A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 premieres, it’s a relief to know that the season is still on track to release in 2027 and HBO is not abandoning its plans to stick to an annual rollout. It’s a nice change of pace for the Game of Thrones franchise, which typically makes fans wait years between seasons due to the larger scale of the shows.

In the meantime, we can always enjoy a binge watch of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1, and with filming wrapping, we should begin getting more updates about season 2 in the months ahead!
