In recent days, news and updates for all things A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms have been rife. The prequel spinoff, set around a century before the events of Game of Thrones, premieres on January 18, 2026. The six-episode first season is wholly different from anything the franchise has seen before; it's not a sprawling, multi-perspective epic, but a tale about a knight-for-hire and his squire adventuring around Westeros. You can see this tonal change right in the brand new trailer that just dropped:

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is based on a series of novellas by George R.R. Martin, who also serves as executive producer. It stars Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall and Dexter Sol Ansell as Egg — better known as Aegon, aka the future King Aegon V Targaryen. The series is brought to television by Ira Parker (who also wrote the fourth episode of House of the Dragon season 1). When Parker was approached helming A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, he made one key promise to George R.R. Martin: the show would never shift to the perspective of anyone in the upper class.

While Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon very much focus on the higher powers of Westeros — from the Starks to the Targaryens to the Lannisters and beyond — this spinoff instead shines a spotlight on the lesser-known and lower class corners of the world. “To find a totally different version of this world that everybody seems to know so well was very, very appealing,” Parker toldEntertainment Weekly. “The fact that we live in this world, though, where magic once existed is very interesting to me. This is the ground and the grass that has seen dragons and dragon fire before. So everything is just like how the world is, but a little stranger, a little different.”

In addition, Parker explained how Ser Duncan's character reflects himself. His ardent determination to keep moving forward, even when the odds are stacked against him, is very much indicative of what we're going to see throughout season 1. "You don’t exactly know the final destination, but you just keep at it. That’s all Dunk has," he said. "That’s his only superpower. He gets up and, one foot in front of the other, he keeps going.”

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set to premiere on January 18, 2026. It'll be the first Game of Thrones universe content of the year, with House of the Dragon season 3 coming in Summer 2026, making up the most prolific year for content in the franchise's history.
