The A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms showrunner has a wild idea for a Game of Thrones cameo fans wouldn’t expect!
As the build continues to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, fans are becoming more excited for the latest Game of Thrones spinoff. Set 90 years before Game of Thrones, the series adapts George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, about a knight named Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) and his young squire Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell) as they travel about Westeros on some adventures.
The show will fill the gap between House of the Dragon and Thrones, as it takes place around 100 years after the height of the Targaryen dynasty but before the Robert's Rebellion established a new power. The show’s timeline placement means there won't be many links to Game of Thrones. But that could change.
Martin himself mused on a panel about how could imagine the likes of Jamie or Tyrion Lannister getting involved in events — although of course, neither man had been born yet. However, there is one wild cameo idea that showrunner Ira Parker would love to fit into the series.

What Game of Thrones character may appear in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms?
Speaking to Polygon, showrunner Ira Parker mentioned that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will have some subtle links and nods to the original series. That includes things like how a road traveled by Dunk and Egg is the same one used by Brienne and her squire Podric in Game of Thrones.
“In the fifth episode, there's a scene where young Dunk is walking along a road, heading back to King's Landing, and it's the same road that Brienne and Pod were on when they were heading off from King's Landing,” Parker said.
When it came to cameos of Thrones characters, Parker shared the idea for one that appears in Martin's books that would be a delight for fans.“My favorite is, and look, it's not until the third book, but there's a baby Walder Frey," he said. "I have this, hopefully, really funny idea that people are probably gonna kill me for. But this idea that something's happening, like there's a runaway horse cart, and this baby's about to be killed, and Dunk intervenes and saves baby Walder Frey. We don't ever make a thing of it. It just happens, and we're on with the story. That's sort of the closest we get to it in the three novels that have been written.”
Walder Frey is a name every Game of Thrones fan knows well. Played in the series by David Bradley, the head of House Frey and Lord of the Twins is a duplicitous man who holds no allegiance or honor to anyone. He solidified his place as one of the show’s greatest villains by helping orchestrate the Red Wedding, even sacrificing one of his own daughters to the plot. His end at Arya Stark’s hands was a joyful moment for fans.
The idea that Drunk unwittingly saves this future monster is just the sort of ironic touch that Martin himself would love. Granted, some fans may be concerned about the series throwing in too many references for jokes, yet the idea of a younger Walder owing his life to this random knight is fun to imagine.
This may just be a pipe dream for Parker, but Game of Thrones fans might enjoy the possibility of more cameos and links between the shows, adding even more to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ appeal.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premieres January 18, 2026 on HBO and HBO Max.
