Fans weren’t the only ones shocked by the twist the Silo season 3 finale pulled with Daniel Keene. The last time we saw Daniel and Helen was when they were standing on the small hill, being torn apart for eternity to come. However, what no one expected was Daniel’s return in the very next episode as the notorious executioner for the founders of the Silo Project.
After the mysterious blast, we see Daniel rapidly sequenced from cryo sleep to wake up and handle a delicate situation. The moment he enters the command center, it immediately becomes clear to the audience what ‘situation’ he has been sent to deal with. Surprisingly, the rebels of Silo 17 aren’t the only thing Troy sees when he enters the room.
His first glance lands on a familiar face he doesn’t recognize, who goes by the name “Susan” now. Yes, Jessica Brown Findlay’s former Charlotte Keene is introduced as Susan, a subordinate of Troy’s in Silo 1, tasked with managing silo living. In that moment, the lack of warmth between the siblings not only shook the audience but Jessica as well, and she shared with Inverse how she felt about the plot twist and its implications for the upcoming season.
Jessica Brown Findlay was shocked by the "Troy" twist
Brown Findlay plays Charlotte Keene, Daniel’s sister, a drone pilot introduced in Silo season 3. Charlotte was already in the eye of the storm when she met Daniel prior to her Iran mission, but ever since her accident, she has been ruthlessly used by the people running the Silo Project.
She was deliberately stripped of her memories by Victor in order to facilitate her trauma. However, she was later recruited to work on the Silo Project and was eventually mysteriously taken into Silo 1 before the blast. The next time we see Charlotte, she’s in the command center and goes by the name Susan, who doesn’t seem to recognize her own brother.
She has been memory-wiped yet again to facilitate Silo 1’s purposes, but at what cost? Brown Findlay weighs in on the shocking Troy-Susan twist in the finale, saying it’s a tense moment when Susan first makes contact with Troy, and while fans were naturally waiting for them to recognize each other, the moment never comes, and it's just bizarre.
“It's mind-blowing seeing Charlotte-as-Susan look at this human being,” Brown Findlay told Inverse. “It's almost like she looks through him, that first point of contact that they both make with each other and it's gone.”
After their emotionless reunion, Susan and Troy’s brief relationship as coworkers comes to an end when Troy dismisses her for insubordination. By the looks of it, Susan still has a fraction of her morality intact when she questions Troy about killing thousands of people when there’s an alternative. Troy, on the other hand, seems completely empty and extremely conditioned by the founders. Therefore, the two finding common ground in the final season will be an interesting subplot.
In the Silo season 3 finale, Susan is put in cryo off-screen after Troy has a conversation with Thurman in which she defends her, saying she’s important to her daughter. We later see Troy in the final scenes of episode 10 when he receives a video message from Victor.
He tells Troy the name of the woman he’s been dreaming about, and upon hearing Helen’s name, memories flood back in, indicating we might get to see the real Daniel in season 4, and that’s exactly what Jessica thinks. Charlotte as Susan will be the key to merging the past and the present alongside Daniel. Her actions in the Silo season 4 trailer indicate she'll be at the forefront of the fight between Silo 1 and 18.
Talking to Inverse, Jessica Brown Findlay let it slip that Daniel might not be the only one who’ll get his memories back in Silo season 4. Although she doesn’t get too deep into it, Jessica hinted that keeping all that emotional turmoil suppressed in her wouldn’t be a choice for Charlotte. Given her strong-headedness and energy, keeping Charlotte in the dark for long would be a challenge.
“All I can say is you can't keep that down, especially with Charlotte. It will bubble up, and it's going to ignite something in her. Imagine someone of Charlotte's energy, all of that being suppressed for centuries; it's going to have a real springboard explosion for how that follows through into [season] 4.”
The actress believes Charlotte’s memories will explode out of her, marking a crucial point in both Daniel's and her character arcs. If Jessica is right, then we’ll see Charlotte and Daniel back in action at some point in the highly anticipated final season of Silo.
