6 Addams Family characters perfect for a Wednesday spinoff

With Wednesday being a major hit, there's potential for other Addams Family characters to earn their own spinoffs.

Wednesday is coming back for season 2, making us think of how many other Addams Family characters could be explored.

While The Addams Family was created as a cartoon series, it really gained fame with the 1960s TV show. That's since led to live-action movies, a pair of animated films, and the Wednesday series on Netflix, focusing on the sociopathic teen played by Jenna Ortega.

The show is a hit, and there have been talks of plans for spinoffs. If Netflix wants to expand on the franchise, other Addams Family characters deserve the spotlight. They have some intriguing backstories to explore, and the potential to show how offbeat the family is. These are a half dozen Addams Family characters who can headline their own show to keep this wild series going.

Gomez and Morticia

This is an obvious idea, as the background of this couple is a story waiting to be told. How they met in the academy would be a wild tale, a mix of Heathers and gothic horror. The two have a bizarre bond, and we know each had their own romances before they got together. Seeing their torture of other students while they banter and get together is fodder for some excellent storytelling.

It would also be fun to see the pair's early days as a married couple, starting a family and, best of all, moving into regular society with no grasp of how strange they are to other people. Get the right actors, and this prequel to how the Addams Family first formed is a spinoff many fans would adore.

Grandma

Gomez's mother comes off in most media as a wacky old woman who spends her time in the kitchen and mixing up various potions. There's a lot that's not known about her, and that's potential for a show focusing on her younger years. We can see her wandering across Europe, getting into escapades, and having her own adventures.

It can also be that she has her own supernatural escapades that the Addams don't know about. It's an offbeat idea, but it would be entertaining if Grandma shows she's as much a dark anti-heroine as her granddaughter is.

Cousin Itt

Even by Addams' standards, Cousin Itt is weird. He looks like a creature made up of huge hair and speaks in a gibberish voice no one but the family can understand. The 1960s TV show had Itt trying his hand at things like acting, a zoo manager, and even a marriage consultant.

Centering a show around a character who can't be understood is risky, yet there can be some fun seeing Itt trying to achieve his dreams despite his obvious shortcomings. Maybe they can add a helper and "translator" for his words and be a good counterpart for Itt. It'd be fun to see the most unusual member of the Family get the spotlight.

Lurch

The hulking butler with the booming voice of "you rang" is mostly a side player for the family, driving them around. We barely know anything about him, meaning there's a lot a TV show can create about his background. Whether he's related to the Addams, if he's even human, how he came to work for them, there's plenty of unknown backstory to fill out.

The 2019 animated movie had him as an escaped mental patient, which is one direction to go. However it falls out, Lurch is another character worth exploring.

Pugsley

If Wednesday can get her own series, her brother can, too. Pugsley's character has always been an inventor, with the debate on how much he understands how dangerous his inventions can be. A show can let that fly with Pugsley coming up with crazy devices that others see as potential terrorism, but he considers just good fun.

The season 2 trailers hint that Pugsley can control electricity, which is also a fun use for the character. That he's more friendly and outgoing than his sister can be another factor to play with, as Pugsley can be a star just like Wednesday with his own series.

Ophelia Frump

She hasn't appeared in as much media, but Morticia's sister can be a fun character to build a show around. She's the "white sheep" of the family, far friendlier and outgoing, a bit clumsy yet meaning well. She's athletic despite her clumsiness and gets along better with regular society while retaining those Addams quirks. Maybe she can pop into the main show first, but Ophelia's different take on the world could make her an unlikely star.

Wednesday season 2 part 1 premieres on Netflix on Aug. 6, with part 2 releasing on Sept 3.
