There have been plenty of awesome moments in House of the Dragon, and season 3 in particular has been responsible for many of them.
Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy) ascending the Iron Throne while leaving a trail of blood behind her is a great example, as well as the long-awaited death of Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel), who wanted songs about his death to be sung across the Seven Kingdoms. But while Cole fittingly failed in accomplishing that task, songs will definitely be sung about an epic episode 7 moment featuring Aegon Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney).
Ever since House of the Dragon adapted the Battle at Rook's Rest back in season 2, life hasn't been the same for Aegon. He recklessly flew into a confrontation he had no part in, and nearly paid with his life as his brother, Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell), nearly burnt him alive. To make matters worse, Aegon's dragon Sunfyre also fell in battle, and the creature's fate has remained a lingering mystery ever since.
After Aegon had his first taste of defeat, life has been humbling (and even humiliating) the former king in multiple ways. He was forced to drop to his knees and kiss a muddy boot just to stay alive; Larys Strong (Matthew Needham) told him how awful a person he was; and the fallen body of his dragon Sunfyre had turned into an exhibition of sorts. But at long last, Aegon has a big victory moment that's bound to make Fire & Blood fans happy.
Sunfyre is alive, and Aegon commanded him to burn House Mooton's army
Throughout the entirety of House of the Dragon season 3, Aegon has been forced into hiding and moving from one place to another despite his difficulties walking. The former king even considered fleeing to Braavos to spend the rest of his days there. Due to his battle injuries, he hasn't been able to face anyone in battle and has been forced to temper his character and act more humble than usual to survive.
As such, it comes as no surprise that Aegon finally had enough when he crossed paths with House Mooton's army—soldiers who answer to Rhaenyra Targaryen and were looking for Tyland Lannister (Jefferson Hall).
The revelation that Sunfyre is alive is a very powerful moment, but it wouldn't have been nearly as impactful if it hadn't been preceded by a speech from his rider. At long last, Aegon finally stood up for himself despite the fact that he was outnumbered and faced with an impending death. All the anger that had been building inside him was finally let out, even before learning that his dragon was still alive.
In the middle of a speech, the Mooton's army (and audiences) hear the bangs of Sunfyre's steps in the background, slowly but surely getting louder and louder. It all escalates up to the point where Aegon orders the army to "behold him," just as his dragon appears right behind him. To make things even more poetic, the creature has half his face completely disfigured, much like his rider.
The two were made for one another.
After enduring so many hardships, it was clear that Aegon was bound to have a big victory moment. Furthermore, given how instrumental Sunfyre is in the Dance of the Dragons civil war, fans knew the dragon was bound to wake from his slumber sooner or later. But although we knew these moments were coming, the execution couldn't have been any better. It's very fitting as well, because the tides could finally turn in favor of the Greens from now onward.
It's also a relief to know that House of the Dragon isn't deviating too much from the source material, where both Aegon and Sunfyre have a very important role to play in events to follow. While we're not going to dive into future storylines here to avoid spoilers, we have a detailed breakdown you can read to get a better grasp of how important these characters are in the novel.
The penultimate episode of House of the Dragon also does a fantastic job of putting all the pieces in place for an explosive finale that should, by all means, be bigger in scope than the ending of season 2. Since the show has taken some major creative liberties when adapting the events of the source material, we aren't exactly sure what to expect from episode 8. On the bright side, it won't be long before we finally find out how this tale comes to a conclusion (for two years, at least).
