House of the Dragon season 3 is just a couple of months away, and based on HBO's new teaser trailer it's poised to be more like Game of Thrones than ever. It's among many TV series that promised to become the "next Game of Thrones" in the years since the fantasy hit's conclusion. And to the spinoff's credit, it's probably gotten the closest to achieving that end, the natural result of it taking place in the same world and chronicling a similar struggle for power.
Ever since its debut four years ago, however, House of the Dragon hasn't fully lived up to its predecessor — at least not in terms of impact. There are a few things this can be attributed to, starting with the fact that it's a slower burn with less action than Game of Thrones. (It doesn't help that viewers are coming off the original series' later, much action-heavier chapters.)
It also doesn't seem to be striking the same emotional chords, despite the fact that House of the Dragon is just as brutal about killing off characters. Perhaps it's because we're not given as much time to grow attached to them. Fortunately, the new House of the Dragon season 3 footage promises to ramp up both the action and emotional stakes in the coming episodes. It really does look more like Game of Thrones than ever, suggesting it's finally hitting its stride — and around the same time that the original series really took off, no less.
House of the Dragon season 3 looks as epic and action-packed as Game of Thrones' best outings
If there's one thing that's abundantly clear from House of the Dragon's new trailer, it's that the scope and quality of the series will be greater than ever in season 3. Although the spinoff benefits from a decent budget in seasons 1 and 2, it's far less epic and action-heavy than Game of Thrones' later chapters. The major conflict gets off to a slower start, and it's more concentrated, focusing on a few areas of Westeros rather than the entire Song of Ice and Fire map.
The Dance of the Dragons civil war promises to expand in its reach in House of the Dragon season 3, drawing in more Great Houses of Westeros and pushing into other regions — two things that begin to happen in season 2. Judging by the season 3 footage, viewers will really feel the shift in the coming episodes. The teaser hints at more dragon action, major battles involving numerous parties (including House Stark), and a higher production quality for it all. This is in line with showrunner Ryan Condal's interview with Entertainment Weekly, during which he teased a "bigger and grimmer" next chapter.
On the visual front, the House of the Dragon footage looks a lot like Game of Thrones' best chapters. And it promises to capture the emotional stakes of the original show, too. This is something else the trailer alludes to, though we already know we're in for plenty of tragedy based on Fire & Blood.
House of the Dragon season 3 promises the emotional impact of Game of Thrones
Another area House of the Dragon currently lags behind Game of Thrones in, if only slightly, is its emotional impact. Its deaths are surprising, and in some cases, heartbreaking — but even watching Lucerys or Rhaenys fall doesn't hit as hard as something like Ned's beheading. It's possible Game of Thrones fans are just numb to the tragedy in Westeros, or it could stem from HOTD's lack of "moral compass" characters. Whatever the reason, there are currently no deaths that evoke the same response that Ned's demise or the Red Wedding did.
And that's a high bar to clear, but House of the Dragon season 3 looks like it could finally get close to that level of emotion. We know from Fire & Blood that there are quite a few deaths on the horizon, including one that will push Rhaenyra even further over the edge — and potentially hit fans harder than any of the ones before.
The footage at the end of the teaser offers a glimpse of what Rhaenyra's grief could look like, showing her weeping before transitioning to shots of several other characters screaming. The characters certainly seem to be at their wits end, and knowing how much loss is coming, viewers are likely to feel just as strongly about the third outing as they did about Game of Thrones' big emotional beats.

House of the Dragon season 3 could follow Game of Thrones season 3's lead
If House of the Dragon season 3 is as similar to Game of Thrones as it looks, it could follow the same trajectory as the original series. Although Game of Thrones seasons 1 and 2 are both incredible, they didn't instantly attract the massive following the fantasy show went on to have. It was Game of Thrones season 3 that saw the series truly exploding, with the Red Wedding cementing it as an all-timer among established fans and drawing new ones.
House of the Dragon season 3 could also prove a turning point for its story, following its predecessor's lead. By now, the series has managed to find its footing, and it's gotten viewers thoroughly invested in its conflict and characters. Add in more high-stakes action, enhanced quality, and some well-placed emotional blows, and it might start to match Game of Thrones' success.
