Ahead of the final season, The Boys boss finds Game of Thrones comparisons "scary"
By Bryce Olin
The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke is feeling the pressure as the cast and crew start filming on The Boys season 5, the final season season of the hit Prime Video series.
In a recent interview with Collider, Kripke compared The Boys to Game of Thrones after he was asked about how he is dealing with the pressure of making the fifth and final season. Kripke revealed that he's simply too busy to worry about how he's going to feel at the end, but it will hit him soon. Instead, he's worried about "landing eight different planes."
"Game of Thrones was an amazing show. When you think of the amount of work and effort and craft that went into that show, and all anyone talks about is the finale. I’m just like, “F***!” It’s really exciting, but it’s scary too."
Well, at Winter is Coming, we can speak a little about that. Of course, the Game of Thrones finale isn't the only thing fans want to talk about concerning the series, especially as more time has passed since the finale aired. But the finale and how the series ended is the last impression fans have of the series. Making sure that they feel satisfied with where things end is definitely part of the equation that the writers should consider. I don't think it will be the only thing, though.
Overall, Kripke and The Boys' creative team will be fine if they handle the story the way they have for the first four seasons. This show always goes off the rails at times, but they usually have no problem getting the train back on the tracks. They've been defying expectations and captivating audiences through the first four seasons. I don't think they need to worry about how the story is received as long as it's the story they want to tell and they send the message they want to send. Hitting those two points, especially given where the fourth season ended, will be the most important things.
About that ending, Kripke also revealed he hasn't shared The Boys ending with the cast yet. He's keeping it to himself and the other writers for as long as possible. "We’re far enough along that I can pitch out the character-wide arcs, but they’re the emotional acrs, so the actors can start working on what their journey is and some of the twists and turns of what goes where," he said. "Frankly, some of them we’re still working out, but we have a solid sense of where they all go, emotionally."
It makes a lot of sense why the cast doesn't know how The Boys season ends yet, right? One of the reasons is that the creative team wants to make sure that none of the big stuff leaks. Actors are reliable, but mistakes happen with scripts, misunderstandings, etc. The fewer people who know, the better.
We also have to assume that, while the season is written or near-written, there will be changes while production happens. Things don't always go perfectly on set, and it sometimes changes the story. Obviously, Kripke knows what's going to happen, but does he know every single detail yet? Probably not at this point in the process. It's very early filming season 5. There are many months of filming left to go.
Despite the series starting production in late 2024, it's unlikely that The Boys season 5 will be released in 2025 on Prime Video. Instead, we're expecting production to last well into 2025, which should push the release date for the final season into 2026.
