Alien: Earth season 2 gets the production update we've been waiting for

Despite a concerning lack of updates since season 1 concluded, Alien: Earth is ready to begin shooting its second season in May, at a studio that's steeped in history for the franchise.

In 2025, Noah Hawley dug out his own corner of the Alien franchise with Alien: Earth, a series set just a few years before Ridley Scott's seminal 1979 Alien film. The FX series garnered solid ratings, and was praised for its fresh world-building, which portrayed the Alien mythos through a new lens.

Alien: Earth takes place in the year 2120, where Planet Earth is governed by five mega-corporations: Prodigy, Weyland-Yutani, Lynch, Dynamic and Threshold. When a Weyland-Yutani spaceship crash-lands into Prodigy City, hybrid prototype Wendy (Sydney Chandler), and a ragtag group of hybrids, discover the most dangerous alien life form in the universe. Outside of the Xenomorph, the series also showcases a range of unique and terrifying alien life. It's a completely refreshing installment in the Alien Universe.

The sophomore season is shifting production from Thailand to London's Pinewood Studios for its next installment, which begins in May 2026. That studio is legendary for super-fans of the franchise; it's the place where Aliens, Alien 3, and Prometheus were all filmed. Speaking to Deadline, star Sydney Chandler confirmed that she begins shooting May, although she has not yet read any scripts.

In addition, executive producer and producing director Dana Gonzales recently posted a production update on his Instagram, writing: "Super excited to start the journey of @alienearthfx season 2. World building in the Alien universe birthplace."

What can viewers expect from Alien: Earth season 2?

After season 1, there's still so much story left to tell. Looking ahead to season 2, Noah Hawley will continue to explore the political side to the story. “I’m interested in exploring the corporate politics of it,” he previously told Den of Geek. “As we’ve seen, there’s an irresistible gravitational pull toward monopoly that corporations and billionaires have. There’s a bit of Game of Thrones to the corporate world that feels interesting to me.”

Of course, he is restrained by the wider franchise. He can't go too far, as to not mess up the continuity. “Alien is always about levels of containment," he added. "The island is a level of containment, and what happens when you expand past that level? Ultimately, the show is called Alien: Earth. I know that, given the canon, I can’t blow up the Earth, but I do think that containment is going to be very hard to maintain.”

Alien: Earth does not have a defined number of seasons, but Hawley has signed a big new deal with FX and Disney Entertainment Television. Clearly his vision is being bought into. Alien: Earth season 2 doesn't have a release date yet. We'll keep you posted.
