If you're a hardcore fan of video games, you've more than likely heard of the action role-playing game Elden Ring. In May 2025, a live-action movie adaptation of this hit video game was announced to be in the works, with Alex Garland (Warfare, Civil War) attached as writer and director, and A24 and Bandai Namco serving as producers. Now, it looks like the project might have just found its next cast addition.
There's a rumor circulating that rising star Cailee Spaeny (Alien: Romulus) may be cast in the Elden Ring movie, potentially as the character Melina, a key figure in the game. On July 24, film industry insider Jeff Sneider posted on X that Spaeny is in talks to join the live-action film.
Once this news broke, fans immediately started speculating on who she could be playing. Many guessed that she'd be taking on the role of Melina, a mysterious character in the game who guides the player (the Tarnished). While others speculated that she could be portraying Ranni the Witch, another major character.
However, Sneider's report did not provide any official confirmation about her exact role. This only left fans eager and hungry for more details, sparking a wave of theories and excitement across social media as they await official announcements from the studio. If Spaeny ultimately joins the cast, it would mark a reunion with Garland. They previously worked together on the action thriller flick Civil War. While Garland wrote the script and directed the film, Spaeny starred as the aspiring young photographer, Jessie Collin.
Spaeny's rumored casting comes only a couple of months after news broke that Kit Connor, star of Heartstopper, was also being considered for a leading role in the Elden Ring movie. Like Spaeny, Connor previously worked with Garland on another movie. He played the role of Tommy in the war film Warfare, while Garland co-wrote and co-directed the movie.
Although Spaeny and Connor have not been officially cast, their potential involvement has already generated considerable excitement among fans eager to see how the Elden Ring movie will bring the game’s rich and complex world to life. With Garland’s proven directorial vision and the backing of A24 and Bandai Namco, many are hopeful that the adaptation will stay true to the game’s deep lore.
