It's official: after years in development, Prime Video is officially moving forward with its Fourth Wing series! Closing out its upfront presentation in New York on May 11, Prime Video announced it has ordered Fourth Wing to series, marking a major step forward for the project, which has been in development since 2023 when Amazon MGM acquired the rights to Rebecca Yarros' romantasy series.

"I'm thrilled to be working with this dedicated, experienced team and grateful for their passion for both the books and the readership behind them,” said Yarros.

Prime Video is looking forward to bringing fans the live-action adaptation of the series in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide by adapting the series that has captivated readers since its release in April 2023. It didn't take long for Amazon MGM to acquire the rights to the series, but the show's journey to the small screen has been a long one. One that Prime Video promised will honor what fans love about the story.

“Violet’s journey in Fourth Wing has sparked a global phenomenon, captivating millions of readers and building an intensely passionate fanbase around its world, characters, and emotional stakes,” said Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television, Amazon MGM Studios. “Rebecca Yarros’ brilliant series is one of the most anticipated adaptations in the world, and with Meredith and our valued partners at Kilter, Outlier, and Premeditated, we’re bringing it to life in a way that honors what fans love about the story.

Fourth Wing, which is based on Yarros' Empyrean book series, tells the story of Violet Sorrengail, a young woman who starts her journey at Basgiath War College. Despite studying her whole life to be a scribe, Violet finds herself in an epic series of challenges to become a dragon rider and then join her country's forces to defend her home.

Meredith Averill will be adapting the beloved book series for television and will serve as showrunner and executive producer on the series with Lisa Joy, Michael B. Jordan, Elizabeth Raposo, and Yarros also executive producing the show. It's unclear how closely Yarros will work with the creative team in adapting the series, but it's expected that she will play a key role in bringing the book to television.

Fourth Wing is already one of the most highly anticipated fantasy shows in the works right now. It's a little bit disappointing that Prime Video didn't have a bigger announcement to roll out during the Upfronts presentation, but it's great to finally have confirmation that Prime Video is moving forward with the series that has the potential to be the biggest show involving dragons since, well, House of the Dragon.

As of right now, Prime Video has not confirmed any cast members or timelines for the series. There are some rumors about some cast members floating around online. Josh Heuston is one name that keeps getting mentioned, but as far as we know, those are only rumors.

Now that Fourth Wing is officially confirmed, the question now becomes how long do we have to wait for this show to start crossing off some milestones, like the start of production, casting news, etc. We don't have that information yet, but it's probably going to be a while until we actually see this show on Prime Video. As we've seen with shows like House of the Dragon, it's hard to bring these epic fantasy shows to life with the amount of post-production that goes into creating this huge worlds with dragons.

With the long wait ahead, it's a great time, if you haven't, to dive in and start reading Yarros' hit Empyrean book series. After Fourth Wing, there's Iron Flame and Onyx Storm. And, there's a fourth book in the works, too!

Of course, we'll continue to track the series from now until its eventual release on Prime Video. We'll share more news about Fourth Wing as we find out!
