The Witcher is a fantasy franchise which is currently experiencing a massive heyday, with a fifth and final season of the Netflix show slated for release sometime in 2027, alongside a new expansion for the universally beloved, 11-year-old video game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt from CD Projekt Red and the start of their next saga, The Witcher 4, following in 2028.
But now we've gotten the extremely exciting announcement that Andrzej Sapkowski, the author who started it all, is returning to his dark fantasy world for another book. Even better, he's already got a clear idea of when he should be done writing it — which means we have a rough idea of when it could release.
This news comes from The Witcher fan page Wiedźminlandia (via Redanian Intelligence), who had boots on the ground at Copernicon in Torun, Poland this weekend, where Sapkowski was part of the programming. During an on-stage chat about his work, the author revealed that he hopes to finish work on the next Witcher novel by the end of 2027.
Sapkowski didn't confirm any other details about the book, but he did reject a question from one fan about the possibility of future Witcher stories being centered around characters other than Geralt, such as Yennefer of Vengerberg. As such, it seems safe to assume this will be another adventure with Geralt of Rivia at the heart of it.
When will Andrzej Sapkowski's new Witcher book be published?
The last book that Sapkowski published, Crossroads of Ravens, was released in Poland in late 2024, before seeing a worldwide release on September 30, 2025. Redanian Intelligence speculates we could see a similar timetable for this new Witcher book as well, and I'm inclined to agree. If Sapkowski hits his goal of completing it by the end of 2027, then it will probably launch in Poland sometime in 2028, then in the rest of the world in 2029.
While that may sound like it's quite a while from now, this is actually an encouragingly fast turnaround for a brand new book in The Witcher series. It would mark the shortest time between books since the fourth and fifth novels of the main saga, Tower of Swallows and The Lady of the Lake, which were published in Poland two years apart in 1997 and 1999. After that, it seemed like Sapkowski was finished with Geralt, until he returned for the "sidequel" novel Season of Storms in 2013, which was a standalone tale that takes place around the same time as the short story collections The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny. Then there was another 11 year gap before the author's next work, Crossroads of Ravens, published in 2024.
The fact that a tentative 4 years might pass between Crossroads of Ravens and this new book indicates Sapkowski is gaining steam. It's rare to see an author return to a series they had presumably finished years later and suddenly start churning out new books, but that seems to be the position Witcher fans are finding themselves in. It's a good place to be!
What will Andrzej Sapkowski's new Witcher book be about?
Another big question is of course what this novel will be about. Crossroads of Ravens was a prequel, and technically the earliest story Sapkowski has told about Geralt's life on the Path. It followed some of the witcher's very first adventures after he leaves Kaer Morhen, when he's only 18 years old and still trying to find his way in the world. Despite being a discreet adventure, it read more like a culmination of all the work Sapkowski had put into the saga so far; in my opinion, it's one of the most all-around solid books in the entire series.
All we know about the new Witcher book right now is that it will probably be about Geralt. But will it be a continuation of Crossroads of Ravens, bridging the gap from the end of that book to the short stories in The Last Wish, where the witcher meets his long-term companions Dandelion and Yennefer of Vengerberg? Will it jump to a different period of Geralt's life, similar to Season of Storms? Either seems possible until we hear more from Sapkowski.
For now, it's just exciting to know that the author is feeling invigorated enough to keep writing new tales for Geralt of Rivia and his friends. And on the bright side, we'll have plenty to keep us busy until the book arrives, between The Witcher season 5, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Songs of the Past, and The Witcher 4.
The next Witcher book release on the calendar is Andrzej Sapkowski's The Witcher: The Last Wish—The Complete Collection, a deluxe graphic novel release of the short stories in The Last Wish from Dark Horse Books. It's out on December 15, 2026, wherever books are sold.
