And you wouldn't guess who's co-producing the project!

Video game adaptations have enjoyed varying levels of success in recent years. Thankfully, there's more positive than negative, depending on what you're looking for. From Sonic The Hedgehog and The Super Mario Movie franchises to Arcane, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and Castlevania, there is something for everyone. Notably, most projects were high-quality animated productions. But for live-action, we also saw major steps with Fallout and even Twisted Metal.

However, horror game adaptations still have hungry audiences, with The Last of Us as one of the only ones to speak of. Castlevania only touched on that slightly, while mostly being a high-octane experience. Silent Hill still struggles to get the movie it deserves, and the Until Dawn official movie was largely forgotten. Five Nights at Freddy's, though charming, is very different than the games. And we don't need to dig up Doom. Resident Evil has a complicated history with Hollywood, and another adaptation is still coming from director Zach Cregger which is said to resemble the survival horror the game is known for. But what other horror game adaptations are on the way?

Rejoice, horror buffs, because at CinemaCon, Sony Pictures announced that an R-Rated, animated Bloodborne feature film is in production. It comes as a surprise because many fans believed FromSoftware, the developers of Bloodborne, and Sony Interactive Entertainment, the game's publisher, had forgotten about one of their star IPs, though a cult classic. As of today, there's no announcement of a second game after more than a decade since Bloodborne's release. The game only has one DLC, no remasters, and not even a PC port. So, to hear it's getting the feature film treatment (animated, no less) is quite the treat to behold.

For those who don't know, Bloodborne is a gothic survival-horror game with visceral, heavy, and gory combat, and profound Lovecraftian influences in its storytelling and world-building. As a cosmic horror fan, I'm itching to get any good interpretation of eldritch vibes into a big-budget production. Bloodborne is the perfect vehicle for that narrative, with grotesque, mind-bending monster designs and hauntingly captivating characters.

The biggest surprise by far, however, is who will help lead the ship of this massive adaptation. Seán McLoughlin, a.k.a. JackSepticEye, was announced to be a co-producer. The legendary YouTube creator and gamer has streamed Bloodborne to millions of fans, proving to be a mega-fan of FromSoftware's work. It's an amazing opportunity, and it will help keep Bloodborne feeling like Bloodborne to the fans.

"I am producing this project, and you have no idea how incredibly excited I am to finally be able to talk about it!" Seán posted on his official subreddit. He continues on saying,  "I am going to do everything in my power to make this the BEST Bloodborne adaptation possible. Not only is it my favourite game ever made, but I know how truly passionate the fans of this game are and how much hunger they have for more of it. I can’t share much about the project right now, but man, does it feel good to let you all know it’s happening!"

Per Variety, Lyrical Media, parent company of Lyrical Animation, is working with Sony Pictures to adapt Bloodborne. As of today, a director, writer, or any cast members have not been announced. A target year is still up in the air as well, but we'll provide updates as they come.
