Daemon Targaryen has always been one of the most unhinged, hot-headed and volatile characters in House of the Dragon; look no further than the infamous Blood and Cheese plot line or the murder of his own wife.
Daemon is inherently dangerous, and a guy you wouldn't want to cross. Looking ahead to House of the Dragon season 3, and Matt Smith says Daemon is fully in “war mode” as the Dance of the Dragons rages on.
Daemon is trading in visions for battles in House of the Dragon season 3
In House of the Dragon season 3, Daemon finds himself recommitted to Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy)’s cause, following his vision-filled experience at Harrenhal in season 2. He (hopefully) no longer seeks to fulfill his selfish ambitions, but ties himself closely to Rhaenrya.
His steadfast approach has him fully locked in battle mode, and prepared to cut down as many Greens as possible. The most notable Green members include Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke), Aegon Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney), Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans), Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel), and Larys Strong (Matthew Needham).
Daemon is well-positioned for a killing rampage in season 3, but don't just take it from us. During his appearance at CCXP MX 2026, Smith rhapsodized about the more brutal side of Daemon shining through: "I mean, look, I think the beauty of Daemon is that he’s sort of everything everywhere all the time. Yeah, I think, but I think he’s in sort of war mode this year. You know, he’s ready for war. We’re going to war."
Smith doubled down on Daemon's mentality in the upcoming season; he's going to be merciless and fight everyone for Rhaenyra's cause. "We’re going to go and, you know, take some green heads, man. Going to cut them off and put them on spikes,” he teased.
BOOK SPOILER: Daemon will enter “war mode” in season 3, but he'll continue to be in that mindset throughout the series. Of course, from George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood, we know that Daemon and Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) go at it in an epic, fatal fight, dubbed the Battle Above the Gods Eye. This event is expected to be depicted further down the line, likely in season 4. Suffice to say, Daemon fans are in for a wild ride.
House of the Dragon season 3 debuts June 21 on HBO and HBO Max. The season will cover some of the biggest battles in Westeros history, not least the all-important naval event called the Battle of the Gullet.
