Allons-y! To the delight of Doctor Who fans, David Tennant is returning for brand-new stories in the iconic franchise.

David Tennant has a unique place in Doctor Who lore: he's the only man to play two Doctors. At the end of the first season of the revival of the long-running British sci-fi series, the Ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) underwent the “regeneration” sequence that transformed him into Tennant. Tennant would stay in the role from 2005 to 2010 and is often cited as one of the best Doctors ever.

After his Doctor regenerated into Matt Smith, Tennant returned for a 60th anniversary special in 2013. Then in 2023, Tennant shocked everyone by becoming the Fourteenth Doctor for a trio of specials.

In between all those runs, Tennant also took part in Big Finish’s long-running Doctor Who audio dramas. These audio stories bring together past Doctors and their companions, using the freedom of radio/CD to craft amazing new tales. Tennant has done over 30 such tales, often teaming with Billie Piper as Rose Tyler and Catherine Tate as Donna Noble.

It’s been a while since Tennant was able to work it in, but the BBC has now confirmed he’s back as the Tenth Doctor in some new tales!

Per the press release, Tennant will be featured in 15 brand-new hour-long full-cast dramas. It hasn’t been announced yet who will co-star with him, but the actor shared why he’s drawn to this genre.

“Big Finish makes it dangerously easy – you turn up, have a lovely time, and suddenly you've saved the universe again," Tennant commented of his return.

Getting Tennant back for the new series was something Big Finish creative director Nicholas Briggs admitted can be difficult due to how in-demand he is. Thankfully, they managed to find a way to work this new 12-story project into his schedule in order to bring fans new adventures with Tennant's Doctor.

“We’re always on the lookout for David to return. He is such a busy, in-demand actor, sometimes it’s just not possible for him to find the time to come to the studio," Briggs remarked. "But we’re always ready and waiting with new stories to tell and now he’s back and we’re loving every minute of it. Get ready for a rollercoaster ride during these new adventures.”

We don’t know what sort of adventures the Tenth Doctor will be up to, but the press release states that the first 12 stories will be released bimonthly from the summer of 2027 on. The last three episodes will be part of a box set that teams the Doctor up with some of his past incarnations (will we hear Ten meet Fourteen?)

Each episode will run roughly 60 minutes, directed by Ken Bentley, produced by David Richardson & Mat Fitton (who also handles scripts) with senior producer John Ainsworth and executive producers Nicholas Briggs and Jason Haigh-Ellery.
