Duffer brothers just teased a key Stranger Things 5 death—but they might be bluffing

Steve Harrington fans did not and do not appreciate the Duffer brothers trolling them on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

Matt and Ross Duffer, aka the Duffer brothers and creators of Stranger Things, have fans worried about one character in Stranger Things 5 after an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

During the episode, Fallon asked the Duffers to use Funko Pops of the Stranger Things characters and arrange them in the desk in a way that reveals some clues. The Duffers put Steve's Funk right on the edge of the desk, half on and half off to signify that he's in danger.

Then, Steve, the Funko, tumbles off the desk, and we are left to wonder if that was intentional or not. Is Steve (Joe Keery) going to actually die in the Stranger Things 5 Vol. 2, which hits Netflix on Christmas Day?

Then, the Duffers posted screenshots of Steve's Funko Pop! on the edge of the desk. They're just twisting the knife at this point, which I have to say I respect, honestly. Why not have a little fun? This is the last rodeo. You have to give fans something as we wait for these new episodes.

Stranger Things 5 Vol. 2 and the finale are right around the corner, and fans around the world are obviously worried they're about to see their favorite character killed off right at the end of the series.

Steven Harrington is the character most fans are afraid will die. I think that's safe to say. Sure, there are people worried about Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), Hopper (David Harbour), and some of the other key characters, but Steve is the guy that I don't think anyone wants to see die AND could reasonably killed off. That was supposed to be his fate a long time ago, but the Duffers met Keery, fell in love with him like the rest of the world, and Steve is the fan-favorite of Stranger Things four seasons later.

The Duffers latest antics might mean Steve is safe in Stranger Things 5

I don't know about you, but the Duffers do not seem like cruel people. They take great care of these characters. They learned a huge lesson about what it means to kill off characters with Barb (Shannon Purser) way back in season 1, and they've made every death (or non-death) count since then.

For that reason, I think Steve is probably going to walk out the finale okay. I don't think they would go on national TV and play up Steve's death like this only to kill him off anyway. That feels cruel, and again, I don't think they are the type to do that.

We still have a lot of ground to cover in the final four episodes of Stranger Things 5, so it's definitely going to be interesting to see which, if any, of the main characters don't make it out of the finale alive. We've yet to really see a big showdown with Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower), and I don't know how Steve and some of the characters without powers would survive an interaction like that. But, hey, maybe that won't happen. Maybe the worst Steve faces are demogorgons and the military? We don't know how it's all going to play out.

On the bright side, the Duffers also revealed on The Tonight Show that no one has guessed the ending for Stranger Things 5 that they've seen yet. There are a lot of theories about who is going to die and how, so maybe it's a good thing the Duffers haven't seen how it actually ends.

And, maybe that's because no one is going viral with theories about every main character, including Steve, surviving the events of the final four episodes.

Personally, I think Steve is safe, safe, safe, and it's less about him and more about how his death would affect the other characters. Dustin (Gate Matarazzo) is going through it after Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn) was killed off in Stranger Things 4. We're still waiting to see if Nancy (Natalia Dyer) and Steve are endgame after that season 4 revelation that's been hanging over this storyline. Killing Steve feels too big for this show to actually do, but anything is possible, I guess.

We'll just have to wait and see how it ends, but hopefully, our guy Steve is going to make it out alive.

Don't miss Steve in Stranger Things 5 Vol. 2 on Thursday, Dec. 25, only on Netflix.
