This year, Netmarble will release Game of Thrones: Kingsroad, a new video game set during the fourth season of the TV show. So the wildlings are attacking the Wall, Joffrey has just died in King's Landing, and Daenerys is settling in to ruling in Meereen. You play as the heir to House Tyre, a minor house in the North, and set out to make it in the world. You'll play through an original story, explore an open world modeled on the Seven Kingdoms, interact with characters from the series, and fight both enemy combatants and fearsome creatures like wights and White Walkers.

Game of Thrones: Kingsroad will come out on PC via Steam and on iOS and Android devices. It's coming out this year, but we still don't have a firm release date. However, Netmarble has revealed that early access to the game will begin next Wednesday, March 26. You can preregister as of today on the App Store and Google Play store.

Starting today, you can also buy Founder's Packs, which will activate when early access begins on March 26. Founder's Packs come with stuff like exclusive costumes, mounts, season passes, and other items. Netmarble put together a little trailer on them:

All told, Game of Thrones: Kingsroad looks like one of the better Game of Thrones video games to come out over the past several years. But if we're being honest, give or take Telltale's series of choose-your-own-adventure-style games, the bar isn't exactly sky-high.

Still, Netmarble has clearly put in the work. It'll be cool to roam the open world of Westeros, the story is intriguing, and the combat looks pretty robust. Players get to choose between one of three classes: Knight, Sellsword or Assassin. What gives a lot of players pause is the fact that the game is made with mobile gamers in mind. Mobile games are still games, but insofar as people want a Game of Thrones video game at all, I think they want a proper console experience with all the depth and detail that implies.

And frankly, the very fact that there are tiered "Founder's Packs" for this game, not to mention early access without a release date, feels sketchy; these are tactics that game companies use to squeeze extra dollars out of players. But none of that means that the game itself won't be good. We'll hope for the best!
