The second season of Squid Game, the most popular show in the history of Netflix, debuted just after Christmas, and was an enormous smash success. Fans are still pouring over the latest entry in the dystopian series, and one found a pretty funny blunder.
Squid Game season 2 finds our hero Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) back in the arena, competing with hundreds of other contestants to survive a series of deadly games in the hopes of winning a huge cash prize. Only he's actually here to stop the games, having won last time and learning that the price wasn't worth it. To that end, he mounts an armed rebellion against the organizers in the seventh and final episode of the season. While that's going down, around the 22:39-minute mark, you can see a camera guy in the background recording the action:
This post from @scubaryan_ went viral, with over 13 million people having seen it as of this writing. Some people are comparing this blunder to the time in the final season of Game of Thrones when someone left a coffee cup on a table in Winterfell.
HBO edited the coffee cup out of that particular Game of Thrones episode shortly after it aired, and it's possible Netflix will do the same for the camera guy in Squid Game. Hopefully we can count on the internet to keep a record.
The blunder is mostly just funny to me. I remember some fans looking at the errant coffee cup on Game of Thrones and decrying it as an unforgivable example of the show's drop in quality, and I imagine select fans are saying something similar about Squid Game. But the reality is that these sorts of slip-ups happen on productions big and small, expensive and cheap, good and bad. Likely very few people would have seen this if it weren't pointed out online. It's not a big deal, but it is pretty funny, and for that I salute it.
We have one more season of Squid Game to go! We know the third and final season will come out sometime this year. While no official release date has been announced, smart money has it landing sometime in June or thereabouts. These final couple seasons of Squid Game were filmned back to back, so we won't have to wait nearly as long for the third season as we did for the second.
