Game of Thrones’s latest spinoff, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, totally charmed viewers when it premiered on HBO in January. A change of pace for the franchise, the eight-episode series follows a hedge knight named Ser Duncan “Dunk” the Tall (Peter Claffey) and the smallfolk of Westeros. Instead of kings and queens as central characters, we get to know lowborn commoners who are just trying to get by. That said, the show is not totally void of royals.

The big twist in the first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms sees Dunk’s squire, Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), revealed to be Aegon Targaryen, the grandson of King Daeron II Targaryen. House Targaryen is featured throughout the prequel series as a tournament takes place in Ashford Meadow. One of the family members we meet is Aerion Targaryen (Finn Bennett), a short-tempered brat who, although cruel, is totally entertaining to watch.

Bennett’s performance has been applauded by the Game of Thrones fandom, so much so that his return in future seasons is in high demand. However, as Dunk and Egg leave Ashford for other journeys, characters like Aerion, Daeron (Henry Ashton), and Maekar (Sam Spruell) are not expected to show up in seasons 2 or 3. That said, should the call come, Bennett is down to don the white-blonde wig again.

Finn Bennett would reprise his role as Aerion Targaryen

While interviewed by Screen Rant at the premiere of his new movie Backrooms, Bennett was asked if he could be written into future seasons despite not appearing in the next novellas, The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight. “Please!” Bennett responded. “I don't know. Let's just wait and see. I was so happy with the way that series came out, and I'm so proud to be a part of it. So proud of Peter and Dexter, and I love all of them.”

Aerion might not be present in the next two novellas which the next two seasons of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will adapt, but showrunner Ira Parker is hoping to keep this show going way longer. And George R.R. Martin is on board. Previously, Parker shared that the acclaimed author “has outlined 12 more of these [Dunk and Egg] stories” with him, and the pair has discussed what the workflow might look like if the show was to go beyond the source material.

Fortunately, Parker and Martin are working together on the future of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and the showrunner does not seem worried about making more seasons work.

“Even though we don’t have the ins and outs of every story, we know canonically the major beats of Dunk and Egg throughout their lives. So we wouldn’t necessarily run into the same trouble as the flagship did. And George has outlined 12 more of these stories that he’s shared with me,” Parker shared with The Hollywood Reporter in January. “These stories take them all the way through their lives. Some of these are just a paragraph, but they give you a sense of where they’re going to go and the people who come back in and out of the story.”

Would it make sense for Targaryens like Aerion to show up in season 4 or beyond? It certainly could. With the second season already well into filming, we doubt Bennett will be reprising his role anytime soon, but we understand fans’ hope for his return.
