Five Nights at Freddy's gripped gamers, YouTubers, and everyone in between when the first of what would be an extensive and expanding lore was released in 2014. The premise was simple: you are hired as the new security guard at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza.

The first film of the same name, starring Josh Hutcherson, Matthew Lillard, and Elizabeth Lail, received mixed reviews but was an undeniable financial success for Blumhouse Productions. It seemed only natural that a sequel would follow suit, and nearly two years later, we have the official trailer.

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is already taking the already-grim, dark, and morbid theming from the first film and amplifying it tenfold. Hutcherson and Lail are returning to reprise their roles as Mike Schmidt, the new security guard for Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, and police officer Vanessa Shelly.

They are coping with the events of the first film (which includes the reveal of Shelly's father as the man responsible for killing and trapping children into the animatronic suits), and, unsurprisingly, Schmidt's little sister Abby hasn't quite moved on. She's still trying to reach her friends, the ghosts of the dead children who possessed Freddy Fazbear and his friends, to no avail.

That is, until they suddenly message her back, asking for help. The trailer reveals new yet familiar characters from the game, including The Puppet and the previously teased Balloon Boy.

Amongst the scares and casualties, including that of what may be the first three victims of the film, audiences come to the realization that the animatronics have been released from Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. But how and why?

There are also several clues to the introduction of Fredbear's Family Diner, the establishment that would later become Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. What new secrets will Schmidt uncover?

Reminiscent of today's Chuck E. Cheese, Freddy Fazbear's Pizza features four animatronic mascots: Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy, who, coincidentally, come to life at night and try to kill the security guard. As each night passes, the animatronic mascots become craftier, with unsuspecting jump scares abound!

The game thrives on tension, with each night growing increasingly more difficult, as the player must constantly keep track of the animatronics while listening to clues as to whether they are approaching the office, with limited options for self-defense. 19 games have since been released, spawning copious amounts of merchandise.

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 hits theaters on December 5, 2025.
