Fourth Wing is one of the most highly anticipated fantasy TV adaptations in the works right now. Fans can't wait for the upcoming Amazon TV series based on Rebecca Yarros' first book in The Empyrean series.
For the first time in a while, we have an update to share from Amazon about the hit series. While it's not a "here's when Fourth Wing is coming out," you can tell Amazon cares about how fans feel about this series.
In a Deadline interview, Amazon TV boss Vernon Sanders wouldn't share where exactly things stand with Fourth Wing, but he did make a promise to fans.
Here's what Sanders said:
"We don’t have news to report yet, so I won’t be breaking anything here, but we’re hard at work. We love our relationship with Rebecca Yarros, who has been incredible, and we’re going to get this one right. So that would be my promise to the fans."
Those are some powerful words from Sanders! I'm sure there are more than a few fans of The Wheel of Time, myself included, who would like to know exactly why and how they are going to get Fourth Wing right after failing to even deliver a satisfying conclusion for The Wheel of Time.
Putting that out into the universe is a huge statement from Amazon, though, and Sanders deserves some credit for going on record and making a promise like that to fans. So far, the Fourth Wing TV series has gone a lot like Violet Sorrengail learning to fly on her first few days with her dragon. In other words, not well!
Jac Schaeffer, the creative mind behind Agatha All Along and WandaVision, has taken over to steer the Fourth Wing ship after Moira Walley-Beckett exited the project earlier this year. Creative changes usually don't signal progress at this stage, but Schaeffer is one of the best in the business.
Even with the changes, I really am excited for Fourth Wing! There's so much potential for a new dragon show to enter the chat. House of the Dragon is fantastic, but I feel like Fourth Wing has the potential to appeal to an even wider audience as it gets going than House of the Dragon.
It all comes down to if, as Sanders said, Amazon can get it right, and that remains to be seen. The Boys was a massive success for Amazon. The Wheel of Time and The Rings of Power? Not so much, although I would argue The Wheel of Time was actually good. Can Amazon make a good fantasy show? We'll find out!
We should learn more about Schaeffer's vision in the foreseeable future. We still don't know exactly who will star in Fourth Wing or when production will begin. Obviously, Yarros has created a world and produced a story that connected with fans. Considering Agatha All Along and WandaVision are two of the best Disney+ shows ever, fans should have incredibly high hopes and expectations for what Schaeffer and her team can do with Fourth Wing.
Amazon's commitment to fantasy as a genre gave me a little bit of pause with the whole canceling The Wheel of Time in the middle of its run thing, but it's great to see the network continue to green light fantasy projects when it seems like other networks are avoiding them. The Fourth Wing books are excellent, and I'm just excited to see Violet Sorrengail's story brought to life.
We'll share more news about the Fourth Wing series when we find out!
