During CinemaCon 2026, Warner Bros. brought joy to the kingdoms all across the world by announcing that the first Game of Thrones movie ever is officially in the works. So far, audiences have explored many chapters in Westeros' history on the small screen thanks to HBO's iconic Game of Thrones show, House of the Dragon, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Now, we're heading not only into a new type of medium but also uncharted live-action territory, as we're bound to witness Aegon I Targaryen's iconic conquest over six of the Seven Kingdoms.
Prior to the film's reveal, it had been reported that both HBO and Warner Bros.' film division were working on rival versions of the project. However, a script from Andor writer Beau Willimon convinced the studio that the big-screen route was the way to go. Unfortunately, Warner Bros. didn't announce a release date for its upcoming movie at CinemaCon 2026, prompting fans to theorize that the project would still be a long way off. So, much to no one's surprise, we indeed have to wait a while before the film fully materializes.
Game of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest will be released after 2027
If a new season of House of the Dragon takes two years to see the light of day, of course, a similar scenario would be in store for a big-screen adaptation. During Warner Bros. Discovery's Second Quarter 2026 Earnings Call, the studio released a shareholders' letter that reveals Game of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest will be released after 2027:
"Our theatrical slate over the next few years reflects the strength of our globally recognized franchises, enduring creative partnerships, and high-profile original storytelling. (...) Beyond 2027, the slate will continue to leverage iconic intellectual property, including the theatrical event film Aegon’s Conquest from the Game of Thrones universe, the next installment of The Matrix, the next Batman film, and a live-action Jetsons film starring Jim Carrey."
In the best-case scenario, Aegon's Conquest will be released in 2028, but Warner Bros. may be looking to push the project back to ensure fans get yearly Game of Thrones releases in the foreseeable future.
During 2026, audiences worldwide witnessed the latest installment in Rhaenyra Targaryen's story courtesy of House of the Dragon season 3. Additionally, 2027 will be home to the second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, while the fourth and final season of House of the Dragon is set to be released in 2028. With that in mind, Aegon's Conquest could be slated to hit theaters in 2029, giving the franchise more room to breathe.
Writing, principal photography, and post-production for big theatrical releases can take an average of two years. However, Aegon's Conquest is currently in pre-production, with scouting and casting announcements yet to come. As a result, the earliest the upcoming Game of Thrones movie could start filming would be in early 2027, making a 2029 release all the more likely. Besides, it's best if Warner Bros. takes its time bringing this story to life rather than rushing it and compromising its quality.
Aegon's Conquest was a monumental moment in Westeros' history in which King Aegon I Targaryen brought together six of the Seven Kingdoms (with Dorne initially resisting). Fans have heard about this legendary tale multiple times across Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, and we have even seen the massive skull of Aegon's dragon Balerion under the Red Keep—a dragon that proved instrumental in the conquest. As such, it was only a matter of time before we saw this story come to life.
With a bit of luck, it won't be long before we get more news on Game of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest. But by the looks of it, we shouldn't expect updates anytime soon.
