The fantasy world George R.R. Martin created in his series of novels, A Song of Ice and Fire, is filled with endless stories to tell and even more adventures to adapt on screen. Seven years after HBO's Game of Thrones ended, we're still brimming with live-action content set in the far lands of Westeros.
The second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will come our way in 2027, while 2028 will be home to the final season of House of the Dragon. Furthermore, the Game of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest movie will be released sometime after 2027. Several other spinoffs are also in the works, including an animated Corlys Velaryon series, and the possibilities don't end there.
Back in 2024, Martin posted a very cryptic entry on his blog, where he wrote: "We also got together with Maisie Williams [in London] for pizza and pasta, and talked about… well, no, better not get into that, do not want to jinx it." This text alone was more than enough to spark speculation that an Arya Stark spinoff would come to fruition. To add more fuel to the fire, The Hollywood Reporter also claimed the project was in very early stages of development at HBO. This begs the question: Would Williams return to the franchise?
Maisie Williams isn't sure she will play Arya Stark again, but she doesn’t deny the possibility either
During a recent interview with The Guardian, Williams was asked whether she had heard about the rumors that an Arya Stark spinoff was in the works and whether she would return to the role. While the actress didn't provide any conclusive answers, she did suggest her character would have to change for that to happen:
"I saw that, too! I was like, 'Huh?' I don't know, really. She would have to be developed in some way because I feel like I've changed so much, and I feel like what people loved about Arya is that she was always a child doing things that were quite grown-up."
There's unlimited potential for Arya Stark moving forward. After all, the ending of Game of Thrones saw her sail west of Westeros into uncharted lands. No one knows what lies beyond the Sunset Sea, and most who try to uncover the truth are never seen again, such as Brandon the Shipwright.
The person who may have been closest to figuring out the truth was Elissa Farman in Martin's Fire & Blood—the same woman who stole the eggs that, it’s rumored, may have eventually hatched for Daenerys Targaryen. Elissa Farman led a ship called Sun Chaser into the Sunset Sea, believing that there had to be something at the end. While her true fate remains a mystery, Corlys Velaryon believed he saw the Sun Chaser in a very poor state back in Asshai, Essos, suggesting Elissa may have traveled around the globe. However, even if that were true, no one knows what she found during her travels.
Likewise, no one knows what happened to Arya after the end of Game of Thrones, with some theorizing that she also traveled around the world and landed in Essos without discovering land in between. Others have theorized that she died, much like the many other captains who tried to venture into western waters. But against all odds, Arya may have found herself in a completely uncharted territory filled with never-before-seen dangers, and that's why her hypothetical spinoff could be great.
Unfortunately, even if HBO is currently toying with possible ideas for an Arya Stark spinoff, it doesn't mean it will ever hit the small screen. Multiple Game of Thrones-related projects reported to have been in development ultimately got axed, such as Flea Bottom and Bloodmoon. Only time will tell what the future holds for Arya, but one thing is for sure: If she ever comes back, Williams should definitely play the part.
