If you ever wondered what Peter Dinklage might be like as a basket weaver in a strange romantic fantasy that even puts some of the absurd aspects in Game of Thrones to shame, then you’re in for a real treat with Wicker.
What is Wicker, you might ask? Well, I’m glad you did. Wicker is a new romantic fantasy movie from directors Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson, based on a short story called “The Wicker Husband.” The basic plot is about an outcast at a fishing village who, seeking human companionship, decides to enlist the help of a basket weaver (Peter Dinklage) to create a husband for her out of wicker. Then, absurdity ensues at its finest.
The trailer for the film was just released on Thursday, July 30, and you just have to watch it to believe it's real.
As you can see, Alexander Skarsgård stars as the Wicker Husband. Is it just me, or does he look like Fiyero’s long-lost cousin from Wicked?
Dinklage and Skarsgård are joined by Olivia Colman, Elizabeth Debicki, Marli Siu, and Nabhaan Rizwan in the film. Distributed by Black Bear Pictures, Wicker will be released this fall on Oct. 23, 2026, just in time for Halloween.
While this does sound like a silly little concept, honestly, I’m here for it. There are plenty of great fantasy adaptations in the works, but something like this — where it is just so egregiously out there and wild that even then you’re still very interested — is the kind of fantasy we need.
After watching the trailer, it seems like this works well for Dinklage. The actor recently spoke about the “frustrating reality” of playing characters like Tyrion Lannister from Game of Thrones in the Variety “Actors on Actors” series with Kit Harington. He also mentioned that he knows people want to see him do more of those roles. Still, he didn’t want to go “right into doing that more.”
While Tyrion is one of the best TV characters in modern television history and Dinklage gives a masterclass in acting in any show or movie he is in, it's understandable that he wants a different challenge from a variety of roles. This is certainly out there.
Dinklage has been on a roll playing different kinds of characters in the last few years. Wicker is just continuing that trend. Since Game of Thrones ended, he has starred in the romantic drama musical film Cyrano, had a major role in Thor: Love and Thunder, and voiced a goat professor in Wicked.
On the TV side, he’s had a few guest-starring roles, but nothing as substantial as his run as Tyrion. This year, he’s going to be a part of the Alien: Earth season 2 cast. In fact, he’s one of three Game of Thrones universe alums to appear in that show. He will appear alongside Jerome Flynn, who played Bronn, and Sam Spruell, who played Prince Maekar Targaryen, in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
