Lena Headey’s Netflix series The Abandons might not be coming back for another season, but the Game of Thrones alum has already booked her next role!
Days after Netflix pulled the plug on The Abandons and announced it would not be proceeding with a second season of its Western drama, Headey has joined the cast of one of the most anticipated sequels in development. As confirmed by Deadline, Headey has joined the cast of Red, White, and Royal Wedding, the highly anticipated sequel to Amazon MGM Studios’ hit 2023 rom-com Red, White, and Royal Blue.
Headey is set to play Princess Catherine, the mother of Nicholas Galitzine’s character Prince Henry. Princess Catherine is a pivotal character from Casey McQuiston’s bestselling novel, but she was one of a handful of characters who did not appear in Red, White, and Royal Blue. With a royal wedding coming in the sequel, it makes sense that Princess Catherine would play a key role in the sequel and we can’t think of anyone better than Headey to take on the role. Though it is an unexpected next project for Headey.
Red, White, and Royal Wedding will mark Headey’s first return to the rom-com genre in two decades since her role in the 2005 rom-com Imagine Me & You. It’s almost iconic that Headey’s return to rom-coms after all these years comes in yet another LGBTQ title following her role in Imagine Me & You, which told the story of a newlywed bride who falls in love with another woman leading her down a path to self-discovery.
Filming on Red, White, and Royal Wedding has recently begun in England with fans hoping for a 2026 release for the film. In addition to Galitzine, Taylor Zakhar Perez, Uma Thurman, Sarah Shahi, Rachel Hilson, Ellie Bamber, Clifton Collins Jr., Stephen Fry, Thomas Flynn, Aneesh Sheth, and Malcolm Atobrah will all return for the sequel. They’ll be joined by Headey and fellow new additions to the cast Henry Ashton, Alex Høgh Anderson, and Chloe Fineman.
Plot details for the Red, White, and Royal Wedding remain under wraps with little known about the sequel outside the fact that it will feature a royal wedding. While fans had initially speculated that the wedding would be Alex and Henry's, but the first video from the set seemed to hint that will not be the case and that it's Henry's sister getting married. Only time will tell if the tease was designed to throw fans off and whether we might actually get to see a First Prince wedding in the sequel.
The one thing we do know is that we can't wait to see Headey step into the role of Princess Catherine! Headey is no stranger to playing royalty, and we're hoping we'll get to see at least a scene or two in which her character will play off of Thurman's President Ellen Claremont.
