Like Sunfyre rising from the ashes, George R.R. Martin made his triumphant return to Worldcon nearly one year after unexpectedly being verbally attacked by a guest during a panel discussion.

On August 28, Martin made his return to the Worldcon platform with an appearance at the 2026 Worldcon event in LA, where Martin participated in a one-hour autograph session set up for attending fans. Martin was all smiles, making his return to an event that has long held a special place in his heart, one where he has made many memories with fellow authors in the space.

“When not signing books or doing a panel or showing a film, I mostly sat around in the bar with Parris and friends, chatting about everything and nothing. I have reached the point in life where that’s the best part of any con for me. It does bring back memories, though. Worldcons these days are filled with ghosts: Howard [Waldrop] and Gardner [Dozois], Ed Bryant and John Miller, so many more,” Martin reflected last September after the 2025 Worldcon event.

This year, Martin opted not to participate in any panels, and, after the events of last year’s Worldcon, we honestly don’t blame him at all for deciding to stick to simply dropping in for a signing.

During the 2025 event, Martin joined several acclaimed fantasy authors, including Brandon Sanderson, for a special panel discussion celebrating their work and the genre. As is often the case on the convention circuit, the event included a Q&A where guests were given the chance to ask questions to the panelists, which was when one shameless troll took the opportunity and weaponized it against Martin, targeting the Game of Thrones author.

“Here’s the thing, George, you’re not going to be around for much longer, and this is a tough question I wanted to ask. This is more directed at Brandon. How would you feel about someone else taking over and finishing the books?" the guest asked.

The question was met with an eruption of boos from those in attendance, and Martin’s fellow panelists quickly rallied around Martin, with one panelist was heard saying, “Not me,” in a quick response to the brash question.

The moment created headlines as word spread online and hit the trades, with many fans coming to Martin’s defense and calling out the “fan” for their disrespectful remark. It’s fans like those who came to Martin’s defense, both in attendance during the panel and after news spread, that likely inspired Martin to return to Worldcon this year, and we love that Martin did not allow the negative experience from last year’s event to keep him away from a convention that he’s frequented many times.

It would have been absolutely understandable for Martin to swear off the event or at least take a break after the outburst he faced last year, but we love that he did not let the troll win. While he might have opted not to jump right back into a panel appearance this year, his return speaks volumes and is a reminder that you cannot let the actions of a few loud voices keep you from doing what you love!

We always love to see Martin out on the convention circuit and definitely look forward to his next panel appearance. At the moment, Martin does not have any additional public appearances slated for the final months of 2026, but there is a good chance we’ll see him hitting the red carpet at the Emmys in September.

Martin expressed his desire to attend the Emmys to support A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which is up for several Emmys, including Outstanding Drama Series. There’s also a chance we could see him make a surprise appearance at New York Comic Con in October should HBO opt to send Knight of the Seven Kingdoms to the event for a second year in a row.

Regardless of what’s next for Martin, we can’t wait to see what’s next for him, and we’re just happy to see him living his best life and not letting the haters get him down!
