Days after sparking concern among fans in a deeply personal and emotional blog post, George R.R. Martin has stepped back into the public eye.
The acclaimed author made his first appearance since opening up about his struggles with depression, doing so in support of Game of Thrones: The Mad King, the new stage play that will expand the world he created in an exciting new way. Martin was all smiles as he joined the celebration of the newest Game of Thrones adaptation.
Martin looked quite dapper, donning his signature bowler hat and suit, to which he added a pop of color via a brilliant shade of purple. via the accent of his shirt and tie.
Martin also took time to pose for photos with the creative team behind the stage production at the World Premiere, including Tamara Harvey and Daniel Evans as well as director Dominic Cooke.
Game of Thrones: The Mad King marks a first for Martin as his first work to be adapted for the stage. The play pulls inspiration from Martin's beloved franchise, with The Mad King set against the backdrop of the final years before the events of the novels to explore a legendary chapter of Westerosi history.
"A long winter thaws in Harrenhal, and spring is promised. At a lavish banquet on the eve of a jousting tournament, lovers meet and revellers speculate about who will contend. But in the shadows, amid growing unease at the bloodthirsty actions of the realm’s merciless Mad King, dissenters from his inner circle anxiously advance a treasonous plot. Far away, the drums of battle sound," teases the official synopsis for the play. "Family bonds, ancient prophecies, and the sacred line of succession will be tested in a dangerous campaign for power. Who will survive? Who will rise?"
The play has been getting strong early reviews ahead of its official opening, and it's wonderful to see Martin come out to support the project, especially after his recent blog post.
Martin’s appearance at the World Premiere of Game of Thrones: The Mad King comes just days after the renowned fantasy author broke his extended silence on his personal blog, sharing a heartbreaking update in which he candidly spoke about his struggles with depression.
“This year has been… stressful, to say the least. So much has been happening, it’s been overwhelming. Some great things, exciting things. Dreams coming true. But there have been nightmares too. I have lost friends. Battled sadness and depression. The worst may be yet to come,” Martin wrote in the post.
He continued by recognizing that life mirrors the worlds of his books, in that there are both highs and lows, including those that come with getting older.
“I turned seventy-seven last September, and I tell you, getting old is no fun. But there have been amazing times as well. I suppose that’s just life. Of course, I knew that. If you’ve read my stories, you know that.”
We imagine attending the World Premiere of The Mad King was certainly one of the amazing times Martin referenced, and it was great to see the beloved author step out to join the celebration as the Game of Thrones franchise expands once more.
While there have been lows, as Martin pointed out in his blog, the year has seen several passion projects released, including the first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which Martin has been strongly involved in. In fact, he ended his blog post noting that he hopes to accompany the cast to the Emmys this fall, where the show looks to take home a few trophies, including the Emmy for Best Drama Series.
