God of War Laufey was revealed during PlayStation's latest State of Play presentation, where the first 20 minutes of gameplay were also showcased. The upcoming Sony Santa Monica title will follow Faye (Deborah Ann Woll) as she embarks on a journey to the gods' afterlife, where deities from different mythologies battle for power. We also got to meet new companion characters such as a cosmic cube called Phranque (Jack Quaid) and a talking sword by the name of Rue (Perlina Lau). What we didn't learn, however, was a release window.
Fans are hoping that God of War Laufey will hit shelves soon, especially since the footage showcased by PlayStation was extremely polished and seemed ready to go. Fortunately, this might prove to be the case, as new reports claim that the highly anticipated video game will come our way next year.

God of War Laufey will reportedly hit shelves in the first half of 2027; a Q1 release is likely
Back in March 2026, insider NateTheHate accurately reported that Sony Santa Monica's new project would be set in the God of War universe and shine the spotlight on Laufey. Furthermore, they also claimed that the game would be released in the first half of 2027. To double down on this idea, reliable scooper Jason Schreier claimed that the game isn't "years" away, making 2027 the only possible option for a release.
PlayStation has historically released some of its major titles in the first quarter of the year: Helldivers II hit shelves on February 8, 2024; Horizon Forbidden West came our way on February 18, 2022; Gran Turismo 7 raced onto the PlayStation 5 on March 4, 2022; and so on. Sony's fiscal year ends on March 31, which means some of its biggest video game releases come a little before that to close things out on a high note. With that in mind, this strategy is likely to be repeated with God of War Laufey.
Even if some big PlayStation titles fail to squeeze their way through the end of one fiscal year, they are released at the beginning of the next. That's why God of War (2018), Saros, Returnal, MLB The Show, and Days Gone Remastered were all released in April. So, in the worst-case scenario, God of War Laufey faces a similar fate.
A big question to ask is: If Sony Santa Monica's upcoming title is nearly ready to go, why didn't Sony announce a 2027 release at the very least? Well, it is well known that most developers across the entire video game industry have been actively trying to avoid releasing a game in the same month as Grand Theft Auto VI, which is scheduled to hit shelves on Nov. 19, 2026. That's why September 2026 is stacked with multiple projects, like Control Resonant, Marvel's Wolverine, Silent Hill: Townfall, and more. They have better chances of success if they go against each other instead of going toe-to-toe with GTA 6.
However, there has been a lot of skepticism that GTA 6 will indeed come out this year, especially since it has been absent from multiple events such as The Game Awards 2025 or Summer Game Fest 2026. Granted, if there's one company that could decide not to promote an upcoming title and still sell millions of copies, it's Rockstar. However, it is no secret that GTA 6 has been delayed twice now, and it wouldn't be surprising if a third delay were in the cards.
If GTA 6 is pushed back to 2027, it would leave a big gap in November 2026 — one that could very well be filled by Sony with the release of God of War Laufey. Maybe that's the reason why Sony Santa Monica has refused to elaborate on when we'll play its upcoming game, because the developer itself isn't sure. Maybe we could even see it later this year.
Fortunately, all signs seem to indicate that God of War Laufey will come our way within the next nine to ten months. Furthermore, it wouldn't be surprising if we get news about Amazon's upcoming God of War TV show during this time as well, meaning the franchise as a whole has a bright future ahead.
