Few gaming franchises are as iconic or beloved as God of War, which is why every new installment is always surrounded by a lot of excitement and some level of urgency to fight a giant god and somehow emerge victorious. Fortunately, God of War Laufey is no different.
Announced during PlayStation's State of Play presentation in June 2026, this new Sony Santa Monica title will put players in the shoes of one of the greatest warriors ever known: Faye. Throughout the events of the two latest God of War games, we heard legendary stories about her and how she became a fighter to fear by beating the likes of Thor in battle. Unfortunately, we never had the opportunity to see her in action because the games' storylines begin with Faye's passing. On the bright side, death wasn't the last of her.
Laufey will now traverse the Everywhen, an afterlife for the gods that includes deities from many different mythologies. But who will she face, and what alliances will she make? There are many questions surrounding God of War Laufey, but PlayStation has finally started to pull back the curtain on one of its most anticipated games.

A new God of War game, cast stories, an official release date, and every detail revealed about God of War Laufey at SDCC 2026
God of War Laufey had a dedicated panel in Ballroom 20 at San Diego Comic-Con 2026. Game Director Ariel Lawrence and Santa Monica Studio Head of Creative Cory Barlog were joined by actors Deborah Ann Woll (Laufey), Chris Judge (Kratos), Jack Quaid (Phranque), and Perlina Lau (Rue) to discuss behind-the-scenes stories and give breaking news about the franchise as a whole.
Things kicked off with a bang, as Cory Barlog officially revealed that there will be a new God of War game starring Kratos as the protagonist. Furthermore, this new title will "connect directly" to the events of God of War Laufey. Coupled with the release of the God of War Prime Video show and the remake of the original God of War Greek trilogy, it is clear that fans of the franchise have a lot to look forward to in the upcoming years.
Deborah Ann Woll stated that she hadn't played video games for about 10 years when she was offered the opportunity to play Faye. Immediately after, she watched six hours of the God of War (2018) game and felt honored to lead a title in this universe.
Jack Quaid also opened up about the experience of being cast as Phranque in God of War Laufey, and revealed that he was on a Zoom call with Cory Barlog and Ariel Lawrence when he was told he would be a cube. His reaction was: "Okay! When they say jump, I ask how high." He then added that he felt "at home" playing the role of a cube by stating: "All cube-related memories were amazing. Most of my time was in a voice-over booth."
Perlina Lau shared that when she got an email from Sony to discuss a potential role in God of War Laufey, she thought it was a scam, but eventually auditioned for the role and had chemistry tests with Deborah Ann Woll. When recalling the moment she found out she was cast as Rue, Lau added: "I'll never forget I got in the car one weekend, put my phone out, saw the email headline, saw the offer, and threw my phone down. I was like, 'Oh my God, I can't tell anyone.' It's been pretty life-changing."

Kratos himself, Christopher Judge, shared how Faye has been instrumental to his character's arc: "I always thought that Faye was the genesis of the change of Kratos. So much of the message in the first two games was about hope and forgiveness and being better. I think that all started with Kratos' relationship with Faye. That's where it began in him, and what kept him going was ensuring that this wonderful life that we had created together would be better than the old man."
Speaking about Faye, Deborah Ann Woll joked that her character is a reluctant hero, much like John McClane from Die Hard: "Okay—I'll save the day and save the building while I'm at it."
Cory Barlog then gave a cryptic statement about how God of War Laufey sets up the franchise for bigger things to come: "Everything we are doing in the Faye game is a continuation of what came before and to set up and expand what comes next. Phranque has been around since the beginning. It's interesting to see how to build this world out. Everything in the game is setting up for something so amazing."
God of War Laufey release date
The panel ended with the news everyone was expecting: an official release date. Mark your calendars, because God of War Laufey will come our way on February 16, 2027.
