Game of Thrones fans might be preoccupied with the Targaryen civil war unfolding in Westeros via the latest season of House of the Dragon, but HBO’s boss quietly shared a major update about A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms that far too few fans are talking about.
Following the show’s Emmy nominations, HBO head Casey Bloys made the rounds discussing the network’s many nominations, including the nine nominations picked up by A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which included a nomination in this year’s Best Drama Series race. During a conversation with Variety, Bloys spoke about the hopes for the show’s future and his excitement about the show breaking through in a very crowded season.
During the brief update, Bloys also confirmed that “they’re finishing up shooting season 2,” revealing that production is nearing its end, which is a truly exciting update. It’s one that also seems to confirm the show’s production has taken longer than many reported, and there is likely a good reason for this.
Early reports suggested that HBO was looking to wrap production on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 sometime in June. However, with Bloys revealing that they’re still finishing up filming, this suggests that the production timeline was slightly delayed, with filming now wrapping up about a month later than expected.
This would make sense given the setback the show faced in having to move production after historic rainfall caused flooding in Gran Canaria, Spain. It was unclear at the time how the brief cancellation of filming and relocation to a new location might impact the production timeline, but it seems that it indeed set the show back ever so slightly. But fear not! While production on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 might have taken a few weeks longer than expected, HBO is still on track to bring fans season 2 in the new year.

HBO has already confirmed A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 is coming in 2027
Although we’ve grown accustomed to having to wait at least two years between seasons for fantasy shows from franchises such as Game of Thrones, HBO is looking to shake things up with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The goal with the series is for it to become an annual release for HBO, and the network has already committed to releasing A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 sometime in 2027.
We don’t know when exactly the second season of the Emmy-nominated Game of Thrones spinoff will premiere, but we suspect HBO might look to roll the season out sometime in early 2027.
Season 1 premiered on January 18 and ran through February 22, 2026, and this release strategy worked incredibly well for the first season. The season 1 finale drew an impressive 9.5 million total viewers over the first three days of the show’s release, with the season averaging 14 million U.S. viewers during its six-week run. The show also achieved a rare feat by growing week-to-week nearly each week in its run, with the only exception being the release of the show’s fourth episode, which aired on Super Bowl Sunday and was released early on the HBO Max app.
That late January into early February window placed the show in a window when many shows were still on their winter hiatus after the holiday season and gave fans a major release to enjoy. One would assume HBO would want to repeat this strategy; however, there’s just one little wizard-sized problem.
HBO will be debuting the first season of Harry Potter on Christmas Day, which means the first season of the series will air throughout January into early February. At this time, it is not known if the Harry Potter series premiere will continue to air on Fridays following its premiere on Christmas Day or if HBO will move the show to Sunday nights. Either way, we have to imagine HBO won’t want to burn through a new season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms at the same time it’s airing the first season of Harry Potter.
As a result, we could see A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 pushed back to late February or even held for spring or summer. We’ll have to wait to see what HBO has planned for the rollout, but it’s clear that the show is still on track to wrap production soon and be ready for its planned 2027 release, and that's the most important thing.
