When it comes to one of the most anticipated shows this year, I don’t think anything has quite matched the hype around the new Harry Potter series on HBO. But unfortunately, it seems our hopes that the series would run for only the next 10 years may be dashed.
HBO Chairman and CEO Casey Bloys recently sat down with Deadline at the HBO Max afterparty for the Primetime Emmy Awards. In the interview, he was asked whether the 10-year plan originally announced for the series is still on track. Bloys was honest and admitted that he really didn’t have an answer at this point because of the size of the books:
“Who knows? Each book is a huge event. I’m right now thinking about season by season as far as what it all adds up to. But I can tell you, Christmas Day is going to be a great launch day for Harry Potter.”
Well, that’s not really necessarily encouraging.
Last year, it was announced that the Harry Potter series would film seasons back-to-back, but Bloys' words on this make me think we might be running into issues with that plan. Recent reports say that season 2 filming is underway, according to Deadline.
But the cast has also seen some shake-ups. Ginny Weasley's previous actress, Gracie Cochrane, left the series suddenly in May 2026. They have found a new actress, the young Bonnie Hill, so thankfully she will be a part of the massive season 2, where Ginny plays an incredibly important role.
But that isn’t the only thing that has been shaken up. Previously, it was announced that Nicholas Hoult would play Gilderoy Lockhart, but he left the series after only a few days due to scheduling conflicts. Not that long after, Kit Harington was confirmed to take on the role. Harrington isn’t exactly a newcomer to HBO — he’s starred in both Game of Thrones and Industry — but it was still a crazy shake-up.
Why a 10-year plan might not work
Even so, this news is still vaguely disappointing and makes me wonder how long fans might have to wait between seasons. Right now, season 2 seems to be in a decent spot, based on what we’ve heard. But Bloys isn't wrong. Each book is a massive event, and each one adds more story.
With the Harry Potter books, the fifth is the largest, clocking in at about 870 pages in the United States for a hardcover. The next two are slightly smaller, with Half-Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows having about 672 and 784 pages, respectively, for hardcovers in the United States. But they are still massive stories with a lot of plot points to tie up.
The team behind the Harry Potter show has repeatedly said it would be a more accurate adaptation of the books and include storylines that weren’t covered in the eight films. Honestly, many Harry Potter fans didn’t see the point of the series originally because the films were relatively good adaptations.
But even now, there are certainly certain storylines I’d love to see in the new series that we didn’t get in the movies. And that’s why the HBO show exists. To do that, however, the show might not have the release timeframe everyone wants, and now Bloys is even saying the 10-year plan might be out the window, given how much there is to tell and adapt.
It is a shame, though. The movies, while not adapting every single aspect of the story, were released over a 10-year timeframe. The first came out 25 years ago, in 2001, while the last was released in 2011. But HBO has adapted huge novels with intense storylines before.
The first four seasons of Game of Thrones were based on the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, which are ridiculously huge and have complex worldbuilding. Some of seasons 5 and 6 were also based on the novels, before the show ran fully out of source material. Even though they aren’t finished yet (and who knows when those last books will be released), they were great adaptations. The story is considered one of the best.
However, the books have much more magic than the show. Because Harry Potter is specifically about magic, God only knows how long those special effects might take, which could also be why that 10-year timeline feels a little out of reach right now.
It is still a great time to be a Harry Potter fan, but I suppose if I have to wait years for each season, that’s just par for the course with most big shows nowadays. A girl can only dream of getting a new season each year. Let’s hope the new Golden Trio isn’t 30 by the time this series ends.
